A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of our beloved colleague and friend, Louie Mack. WHEREAS, Louie Mack was born in Fayette County on November 28, 1923, to the late Nathan and Hannah Mack, and departed this life on February 17, 2006, at the age of 82 years; and WHEREAS, Louie Mack was a graduate of Henry Clay High School, and earned degrees from Transylvania College and the University of Kentucky, and served his country in the United States Army during World War II, before beginning his long and distinguished career in education and public service. Working as an educator and school administrator in the Fayette County school system for nearly four decades, Mr. Mack provided great leadership in seeking enhanced revenue for schools, and shaped young minds by sharing his love of learning; and WHEREAS, upon his retirement as an assistant superintendent in 1982, Louie Mack served in the House of Representatives from 1984 until 1992, and during his tenure was a devoted advocate for education reform, and was instrumental in the passage of the historic Education Reform Act of 1990. In addition to his membership on a number of committees, he also was Vice Chair of the Education and Health and Welfare Committees, and became known for his intellect, his enthusiasm and determination, and his gentle spirit; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement from the House of Representatives, he returned to the chamber as a doorkeeper, greeting members, visitors, and staff with a quick smile and hearty welcome; and WHEREAS, in addition to his contributions to education and to the legislative process, Louie Mack was active in dozens of civic groups, and served his community in countless ways, including his work with the Meadowthorpe Neighborhood Association, of which he was founding president in 1982. He was the worthy recipient of many honors and awards for his service to his fellow citizens, and was an active member of the

Calvary Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, Louie Mack is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Chumley Mack; four children, Carolyn Lucas, Beverly Kanatzar, Tim Mack, and Debra Mack; four grandchildren, Mark Lucas, Amanda Lucas, David Kanatzar, and Katie Waffird; and three great-granddaughters, who were his pride and joy, Rachel, Kaley, and Rebecca Lucas; and a host of friends of every walk of life throughout the Commonwealth; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: Section 1. The members of the House of Representatives mourn the loss of Louie Mack, but celebrate the memory of a life well lived by a gentle man who exemplified these words: "To be able to practice five things everywhere under heaven constitutes perfect virtue. . .gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness, and kindness." Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory of Louie Mack, husband and father, grandfather, educator, public servant, and friend. Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Catherine Chumley Mack, 271 Burke Road, Lexington, Kentucky 40511-2330.
