Student of Ms. McWhorter’s 2nd grade class will work at home to research a famous Black American. Students will write a one page, handwritten paper (on notebook paper), double spaced in their BEST handwriting. The paper will be written in 1st person (as the voice of the person they are researching). Additional requirements in the paper are below.
The written paper must include ALL of the following about their famous Black American: 1. Birthdate and birthplace 2. What are they know for? When did this happen? 3. Give a brief description of what they did (1/2 page) 4. Are they still alive? If so, how old are they now? If they are deceased, when did they pass away? 5. Three (3) Fun Facts that you learned through your research that you think your reader’s would find interesting about this person.
As a reminder: Students must use their best handwriting. Spelling and mechanics will be graded. Students should use proper punctuation, capitalization, subject- verb agreement.
In addition, each student will dress up as their selected person of research for our living museum on Friday, February 28th. Students “come to life" and will present biographical and fun facts about the person they have researched during our museum exhibit. Students will not have to wear their uniform on this day. They should dress up as their individual. This will require research. Hats, scarves, dresses, slacks, dress shirts, and dress shoes are permitted. If you have any specific questions about a costume, please contact Ms. McWhorter. Students may wish to also place facts on notecards so that they may easily reference them while presenting information to other classes as they visit our museum. While students may use notecards, the information needs to be memorized; students should use these as a reminder only of what they have learned.
This project will give each student the chance to grow in the areas of History, Research, Reading & Language Skills, Artistic Creativity, and also give an opportunity to practice public speaking!
This project will consist of 2 Social Studies Grades and 2 Language Arts grades!! NO LATE GRADES WILL BE GIVEN. IF A STUDENT DOES NOT COMPLETE THEIR PAPER AND IS NOT READY TO PARTICIPATE ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28 TH THEN THEY WILL EARN A ZERO.
Happy Research!! Ms. McWhorter
