  • News and Nationalism in Afghanistan, America and Pakistan During Wartime, 2010-2012
Patterns in the Chaos: News and Nationalism in Afghanistan, America and Pakistan During Wartime, 2010-2012 Katherine Ann Brown Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Katherine Ann Brown All rights reserved ABSTRACT Patterns in the Chaos: News and Nationalism in Afghanistan, America and Pakistan During Wartime, 2010-2012 Katherine Ann Brown This dissertation examines the United States’s elite news media’s hegemony in a global media landscape, and how it can come to stand for the entire American nation in the imagination of outsiders. In this transnational, instantaneous digital media arena, what is created for an American audience can fairly easily be accessed, interpreted and relayed to another. How, then, is U.S. international news, which is traditionally ethnocentric and security-focused, absorbed in Afghanistan and Pakistan, two countries where the United States has acute foreign policy interests? This study draws from two bodies of scholarship that are analogous, yet rarely linked together. The first is on hegemony and the U.S. news media’s relationship with American society and the government. This includes scholarship on indexing and cascading; agenda building and agenda setting; framing; and reporting during conflict. The second is on the American news media’s relationship with the world, and nationalism as a fixed phenomenon in international news. This includes examining the different kinds of press systems that exist globally, and how they interact with each other. Afghanistan and Pakistan’s media systems have expanded dramatically since being freed in 2002 and they struggle daily with making sense of the volatility that comes with the U.S.-led Afghanistan war.

For Immediate Release HISTORIC FOOTBALL MATCH DRAWS RECORD BREAKING 12 MILLION PLUS VIEWERS ON AFGHANISTAN’S LEADING TV CHANNELS Kabul, August 29th, 2013 – According to a survey conducted by ATR Consulting, the Friendship Match played in Kabul between the national football teams of Afghanistan and Pakistan on August 20th continues to demonstrate MOBY GROUP’s dominance of Afghanistan’s airwaves through TOLO TV and Lemar TV. With a record-breaking audience of 12.16 million viewers, the Friendship Match broadcast stands as the single most watched telecast in the nation’s history. Pakistan’s PTV, the country’s largest media operation, also televised the historic encounter on their sports channel to great acclaim. This milestone clearly illustrates Afghanistan’s overwhelming passion for football in advance of the second season of the Roshan Afghan Premier League (RAPL), which kicked-off just two days later. Page| 1 The survey was conducted by telephone with respondents from 31 of Afghanistan’s provinces. Overall, results of the survey indicated that 65% of the population possessing a telephone watched the match. These labourers reach Kerala to work in varied sectors such as construction, jewellery, agricul- ture, hospitality, food processing etc. This influx is so pronounced that it has begun to impact the social fabric of the state; so if you’re a Keralite visiting your hometown after a long time, the sights of Delhi-like flea markets, street vendors selling Bengali sweets and way too many men wearing pants (as opposed to Mundus/lungis) are bound to surprise (or perhaps even shock) you! While on one hand Kerala struggles with chronic unemployment, on the other it welcomes migrants with (seemingly) open arms. How does one explain the dichotomous situation that Kerala is in? It’s rather simple, Kerala struggles with educated unemployment. Effectively, the high lit- eracy rate has “boomeranged” on Kerala by creating a glut of skilled labour that would not settle for less than a white-collar job. Economists like KK George refers to it as the “second generation” problem of growth. Kerala is fundamentally a remittance based economy; the state thrives on remittances sent by Malayalis engaged in semi-skilled or skilled jobs primarily in the gulf and the rest of the world. Remittance sent by Ker- alites has touched an annual figure of Rs.
