LAWTON ELEMENTARY School Advisory Council (SAC) September 5, 2017

1. Meeting Called to Order: 5:32 P.M.

2. Introduction of SAC Committee:

 In attendance: Chris Schmidt, Yuanli Bai, McKenzie Kaplan, Sabrina Juarez, LaShauna Hinton, Vanessa Row, John Mazzanovich, Miranda Quinlan, Cathie Mannion, Sharon Weisbrod, Diane Sellan, Leslie Durias, Lindsay Todd, Garret George (guest), Tiffany Wood (guest), and Dave Balakrishnan (guest)

3. Officers Elected  SAC Chair: Cathie Mannion  SAC Vice Chair: Chris Schmidt  SAC Secretary: Diane Sellan

4. By-Laws and SAC: The By-Laws were reviewed by the committee.

5. Lawton Updates:  Maker Space and STEM labs. Maker Space encourages students to be creative with areas such as origami, Legos, art, Tinker Table, Stick Bot, and Makey Makey. STEM is also now on the Specials Wheel. We will tour these areas at one of our upcoming meetings.  Dr. Griffin and 4 school board members visited Lawton on Tuesday, Sept. 5th and we received great feedback. The commented on how polite and happy the students were, and also on how great the classrooms and campus looked.  We are a Golden PBS Model School this year. This is the highest level of achievement for PBS!! Our PBS committee has worked very hard to create great plans and incentives for our students.  We received the Golden Shovel Award for the Most Creative Outdoor Classroom in the state!! Way to go Dr. Ferell and Mrs. Palmer!  This year we will be offering Lunch in the LESA Garden once a month for parents to picnic with their child(ren).  The new playground is officially open for 2nd-5th grade.  Students are still able to check out books in the library. We have parent volunteers that will be helping out for book checkouts and returns.

6. Budget Approval for SIP Funds: The proposal of $2,000 for ½ day subs for teachers to work on team planning and $900 for supplies (ex. Cub Clubs) was approved by the committee.

7. Questions/Comments Around the Table:

 Will we be reviewing last year’s IOWA or FSA data? We will review how the FSA structure works and how we achieved an A. We will also take a look at the new iReady program and learn how to read the iReady results.  How can we verify IT privacy within our systems? Dr. Durias will reach out to our IT department at the county level.  Can we keep a consistency with the computer programs used for testing/data (SuccessMaker)? iReady is a research based program that our county has a 3-year contract with at this time.  Are the Buddy Benches still be used this school year? Yes, the students have viewed a procedural video on the morning announcements but we will continue to show the video and discuss the procedures of the Buddy Benches.  Will the students be using the new playground in shifts? The new equipment just opened Tuesday, September 5th and once the excitement of it being open has calmed down the recess rotations will return to our regular recess schedule.
