JOB TITLE: Chief Electrician

JOB PURPOSE: To manage and ensure the efficient and safe running of the LX department and its equipment. To be a key player in the mounting of ensemble productions, Rep Creative Learning productions and the presentation of incoming shows.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Production (stage)

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Head of Sound, Deputy LX, LX casual staff

KEY INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Head of Production (stage) and Head of Production (ensemble) Senior Management Team members of production team and ensemble, Rep Creative Learning team, Visitor Services Manager, SDT production team

KEY EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Colleagues in other theatres, suppliers, casual staff.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The chief electrician is a Head of Department and, as such, is a senior member of the theatre production department, responsible for the efficient and safe running of the LX department and its equipment, as well as the general electrical maintenance of the theatre and associated buildings. He/She may also be required to design lighting for ensemble and creative learning productions/events.

KEY DUTIES:

1. Electrical safety and safe working practice and risk assessment documentation

2. Supervising, scheduling, and development of the work of LX team members both full and part time for in-house and incoming touring productions.

3. Liaising with and providing a high quality service to all visiting creative teams, companies and artistes.

1 4. Safe rigging and focusing of lanterns and other equipment for in-house and incoming productions. Recording and rigging sound for in-house and visiting productions.

5. LX focusing/board plotting and operation of lighting, Projection and sound for in- house and visiting productions.

6. Organisation of equipment, Operation of lighting and sound on tour as maybe required

7. Maintenance of all electrical equipment in the theatre and associated buildings including annual PAT testing

8. Comply with company Health and Safety policies and HSE standards paying particular attention to stage and LX areas of work to ensure a safe working environment at all times

9. Installation and replacement of electrical equipment within agreed production budgets.

10. In liaison with lighting designers discussion of design and preparation of plans for in- house productions

11. The construction of all electrical props and settings.

12. Working within production budgets

13. Insofar as other duties permit provide back up and support for other departments.

14. Be a key holder.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES

1. At least five years experience in technical theatre or running of an LX department in a medium/large scale producing theatre 2. Leadership skills 3. Staff management experience 4. Strong administrative and organisational skills 5. Knowledge and experience of current Health and Safety issues and legislation 6. Experience of Scheduling 7. PC literate (including Word, Excel and CAD) 8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 9. Self motivated and pro-active approach 10. Strong team player with the ability to manage and motivate a team 11. Ability and willingness to work flexible hours

2 DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES

1. Experience of working at manager level within a theatre context 2. A passionate interest in contemporary culture, particularly theatre 3. An interest in training and skills development for emerging theatre practitioners

TERMS AND CONDITIONS  Hours worked will be 39 hours/week. Overtime is not paid, though Time off in Lieu can be taken. Regular hours will include evening and weekend work and the nature of the work and responsibilities might necessitate longer hours.  This is a permanent post.  There is a probationary period of six months during which time the notice period is one month, thereafter the notice period is three months.  Holiday entitlement is 20 days per year (April to March) plus statutory days rising to 25 days per year following completion of five years service.  There is an Employer contribution pension scheme  All staff are required to uphold the Theatre’s policies, which are outlined in the Induction Pack
