Position Summary

The ESOL/ENL Program at Chemeketa Community College serves approximately 3,000 students and produces about 290 student FTE each year. The mission of the program is to provide high-quality, rigorous instruction to adults who need to improve their English proficiency to attain their goals of employment, advancement in employment, or transition to post-secondary education or training. Vocational Instruction in the Chemeketa ESOL Program is provided by qualified professionals using a variety of instructional techniques. The program collaborates with community partners throughout the Chemeketa Community College district, Career and Technical programs, and community service providers to prepare English Language Learners for local employment opportunities.

The typical assignment of a VESL instructor requires teaching evening and/or weekend classes which may include all language skills at various levels of English proficiency. Instructors are expected to teach assigned classes, assess and advise ESOL students, and collaborate with colleagues and community partners in program development and curriculum design. In addition, this position may also include Adult Basic Education and pre-college instruction offered within the department. The college provides many opportunities for innovation in curriculum development and teaching, including a multi-media language lab, computer labs.

The ESOL Program is looking for a faculty member who can evolve our curriculum and pedagogy in order to include issues of culture, race, ethnicity, nationality, and twenty first century demographics into their teaching and curriculum.

Salary

$47,612.00 - $78,142.00 Annually

Requirements

A Master's degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) or a related field from an accredited institution. Graduate course work from an accredited institution in second language acquisition and methods of ESOL instruction. Five years' experience teaching ESOL or VESL.

One or more of the following:

The ability to teach beginning through advanced level academic transition ESOL and/or VESL classes to adult students with a range of educational backgrounds. Experience developing and delivering vocational and occupational specific VESL curriculum and working with English language learners preparing for new employment or training. The ability to pilot, evaluate and revise course offerings in collaboration with a diverse team and effectively use a variety of instructional approaches and materials.. The ability to use appropriate technology for instruction, communication, and data gathering. A commitment to understanding, developing, and providing a learning environment that supports diversity.
