Course Guidelines and Grading Policy

Course Description

Math core is an individualized life-skills math course offered at Lakeland Regional High School that is able to reach the needs of each student. Students will explore the fundamentals of mathematics through the lens of everyday life and while learning important tasks needed for a successful future.

Guidelines

Throughout this course we will be experiencing mathematics through the following;

1. Food

2. Health and Nutrition

3. Travel

4. Shopping

5. School

6. Home

7. Weather

8. Sports

9. Contracts 10. Jobs

11. Banking

12. Budgeting

Throughout these units students will practice skills in adding/subtracting (with & without a calculator), multiplying/dividing (with & without a calculator), comparing quantities, measurement, problem solving, reading, interpreting and building graphs and charts, expressing problems and situations mathematically, mathematical reasoning, etc.

A letter will be sent home with your child at the start of each new unit with some ideas that you can do at home with your child that will help bring the material to life outside of the classroom.

Requirements

 Math folder so that I can send home letters, homework, etc. If your student already has a take-home folder for all subjects that is fine too.

 Writing utensil (pencil preferred)

 Paper or notebook

 Calculator – any will do

Grading Policy Homework: Students will be sent home with occasional homework assignments. These can range from finding something and bringing it into class the next meeting day to a simple worksheet to reinforce mathematical concepts.

Participation: Students will be expected to participate in classroom lessons and activities.

Math Journal: Students will be given occasional journal assignments. These will be provided to each student during class. Many times these will be given at the onset of a new unit to help students begin to brainstorm new ideas related to the new concept.

Concept Meetings: Concept meetings are in place of tests. They will have the same purpose, to test students’ conceptual knowledge, but they will be done in a one-on-one setting.

Projects: There will be many small projects thrown into different lessons. Most of these will be completed together, in class. If there is something sent home that is part of a project, it will be counted as a homework assignment.

Student Portfolios

Each student will be provided with a three-ring binder which will serve as their math portfolio. These portfolios will document each student’s progress throughout the class and it is where we will keep all completed work, projects, graded concept meetings, journals, and anything else done in class. These will be available at any time to you so that you can also see your child’s progress throughout the year.
