NJHS By: Arianna R. (2013-2014) National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of many clubs here at Harris Academy. In order to learn more about NJHS I interviewed Ms. Melton, the NJHS coordinator. Students can become members of NJHS by having good character and good grades. Ms. Melton looks at the numeric score from all their classes during the first semester. Students are recommended in sixth grade and are members in seventh and eighth grade. Members meet on Friday mornings, every other Friday at 8:00am in the auditorium. They also meet as needed. Some events that members have taken part in are they assisted judges in the local Science Fair, they collected toiletries (toothbrushes, soaps, etc.) for the homeless, and they helped support Breast Cancer Awareness by passing out pink ribbons to faculty and staff. They have collaborated with other clubs for events such as working with the Student Council, the Peer Mediators, and the Science Club. They have also assisted the Athletics Department and the Science Club to complete their required service hours. NJHS members are required to complete 24 community service hours per year. Some acceptable activities for service hours can be assisting teachers with their bulletin boards, assisting as tour guides when the fifth graders visit our campus, assisting athletic coaches with concessions, and other approved activities. When asked if she likes her job as the NJHS sponsor Mrs. Melton replied, “Yes because each person in the group has a different personality and they bring something special to the group. Also they are a fun group of students.” There are benefits to being a NJHS member such as it is an honor when you are going to high school and it can lead to participation in other organizations like the National Honor Society, the high school version of NJHS, along with many other scholastic organizations and clubs.
