Lab: Predicting Chemical Reactions

LAB: PREDICTING CHEMICAL REACTIONS Objective:  To perform 3 chemical reactions and make observations of reactants and products.  To identify the chemical reaction by type, and to write and balance each chemical equation.

Procedure: 1. Obtain a 9-volt battery, 2 alligator clips, and 2 pieces of pencil lead and set up your apparatus as described by your teacher. 2. Fill a reaction well with CuCl2. 3. Place both pencil lead electrodes at opposite ends of the reaction well and observe through the binocular microscope. Make observations below.

4. Fill another reaction well with CuCl2. Place a very small piece of Al wire in the solution, and observe through the binocular microscope. Make observations below. 5. Fill a third reaction well with AgNO3, and place a small piece of Cu wire in the solution. Observe through the binocular microscope and make observations below. 6. Write chemical equations for each of the three reactions.
