Differences Between 2007 Grid and Booklet FFQs
The multivitamin question in the booklet asks the respondent how many years he/she has taken them, in addition to the frequency and brand questions. In the individual vitamin section Beta Carotene is allotted its own question in the booklet. In the grid it is included in the other supplements question. The same is true for Iron and Fish Oil. Brewer’s yeast, Gingko biloba, Evening primrose, Melatonin and Glucosamine/Chondroitin are listed as other supplements in the booklet. They are not included in the grid. In the grid format all foods have the same frequency options ranging from Never, or less than once per month to 6+ per day. In the booklet each food is assigned its own unique frequency. The booklet FFQ asks what type of yogurt is usually eaten; none, regular, low fat or nonfat. The grid FFQ includes soy as an option for the “what type of cheese do you usually eat” question. The booklet has none, regular, low fat or lite and nonfat. The booklet has 3 individual questions concerning pure butter, spreadable butter and margarine or spread. These are in addition to the margarine or spread form, type and brand questions which is included in both FFQs. Applesauce is assigned a question in the booklet as is grapefruit juice. Grapefruit juice is grouped with grapefruit in the grid. Egg Beaters or egg whites are assigned a question in the booklet FFQ. The liver questions, (both beef, calf or pork and chicken or turkey), are not included in the Eggs, Meat, Etc. section in the grid. They have been relocated as individual questions on the last page of the FFQ. The booklet provides an additional frequency response: 2 or more servings per week. In the grid questionnaire the respondent is given the option of filling in a “don’t eat cold breakfast cereal” bubble as opposed to specifying brand and type. In the booklet there is a question assigned to other grains, e.g., bulgar, kasha, buckwheat, etc. Home baked cookies, cake, and sweet roll, coffee cake or other pastry have questions in the booklet. In the grid commercial and home baked items are not listed separately. Fat free or reduced fat and other options are provided for cake, cookies and sweet roll, coffee cake and other pastry. The booklet FFQ includes a wheat germ question as well as a question for salt added at table and garlic. The booklet FFQ provides a N/A response for bother of the “what kind of fat” questions. The booklet includes a diet changes section. It asks if the participant currently follows a special diet. It then asks if it is physician or self prescribed, how many years and what type of diet. The booklet asks how the use of the following food has changed in the past 10 years (decrease, stay the same, increase); whole milk, butte, margarine, eggs, fish, red meat, fruits, vegetables, whole wheat bread, whole grains, sugar and alcohol.
