Announcements for School

Good Afternoon, this is Steve Mares, principal of Broughton High School with announcements for the upcoming week. A copy of these announcements will be posted on our school website and e-mailed to the Broughton email group.

Our First Day of School is on Monday, August 29th! Students, please know that we will start the first day of school in our CAPS Class beginning at 7:25 a.m. Students will receive a new copy of their schedule in their CAPS Class.

We will have the same Bell Schedule again for the 2016 – 2017 school year. School will start at 7:25 a.m. every morning and end at 2:18 p.m. Please know that First Period begins promptly at 7:25 a.m. and students are expected to be in class, ready to learn at 7:25 a.m. For the first 11 days of school, students will have a CAPS Class so that we can share important information and begin the year on a positive note. After those first 11 days, students will only attend CAPS Class on Tuesdays and for approximately a week when Report Cards come out. Please visit our website to see the daily schedule for the school year.

If your student will be riding the bus to school, students and parents can go to www.wcpss.net/transportation. Please click on the bus routes link and that will take you to all of the schools for Wake County Public School System. Look for Broughton High School on this page and click the link to find our bus routes. Please find the intersection nearest your residence and that will be your bus stop. Please be familiar with your bus route and plan to get to your bus stop at least 10 minutes early. With regards to carpool, please be sure that if you are dropping a student off in the morning you enter Broughton High School’s front parking lot off of St. Mary’s Street and continue to follow the parking lot around until you get to the front of the school. Please drop your student off and then proceed to leave campus out the exit onto Peace Street. Peace Street is Exit Only and you can take either a left or a right turn out of our parking lot. I ask that you please do not drop students off in the back parking lot or along the Strip in the morning, as that is reserved for our bus transportation. I also ask that you not let your student out on Saint Mary’s Street. Thanks for your help in ensuring the safety of all of our students and staff.

Students will be able to fill out a drop/add form in Student Services if they wish to change a class from August 29 th through Friday, September 9th. Due to class sizes, the only change that can be guaranteed during the drop/add period is an appropriate class level change.

I would like to remind all of our students and families to be respectful of our Broughton neighbors. Please remind your students to park legally, drive in a safe manner, throw trash away properly in trash cans, and use appropriate language as they walk, drive, and move around our school campus. We want to be responsible and respectful neighbors, and I ask that we all represent Broughton in only the highest manner. Thanks for helping to carry on our tradition of excellence both inside and outside of the classroom!

Parents, I urge you to please be sure to read the DAB (Daily Announcements Bulletin) that is posted on-line each day of school on our website. This informative Bulletin gives updated information on club activities and meetings, play and choral tryouts, athletic information, Community Service opportunities, scholarship information, and an abundance of other information to keep students and families’ up-to-speed with what is happening at Broughton. This is an invaluable resource that is posted to our website and highlighted with our students each day.

Parents I would like to enlist your support in helping us maintain appropriate dress at school. Please be sure that students do not wear strapless shirts and dresses, thin-strapped shirts, tank-tops, short-shorts, and other clothing that violates the dress code. I would ask that we work together in order to be sure our students dress appropriately and focus on learning. We will be focusing on our dress code for the first few weeks of school and I thank you for your support!

The PTSA Grounds Committee is hosting a Broughton Clean-Up Day to get the school looking good for the first day of classes. Parents and students can come to the school and meet in the front of Holliday Gym on Saturday, August 27 th, at 7:30 a.m. The clean-up will last from 7:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Students can earn Community Service hours for their participation in this activity. Please bring work gloves, blowers, pitch forks, shovels, wheel barrows, or any yard tools you may have. This is a great opportunity for our new Freshmen to begin earning Community Service and support our school! Thank you very much for your support in helping our school shine and look inviting in order to welcome everybody back on the first day of school!

I hope you all received the PTSA Summer newsletter that is loaded with great information. Please take time to read and follow-up on this important information about so many aspects of our school family.

Please remember that if you would like to volunteer in any Wake County Public School System school you must register or reactivate prior to helping with any tutoring, office support, sports, band, or club activity this school year.

Please remember that we have begun our Fall Athletic Season already. Tonight our Football team has a 7:00 p.m. game at home against Cary High School. Our boys Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball, Girls Tennis, Girls Golf, and Cheerleading squads have all had great starts to their season! Please check our Athletic Team schedules on our Broughton Athletics website and I hope all of our students and our entire school family come out to support our student athletes and build school spirit! Go CAPS!

Those are all of the announcements for this week. As always, I thank you for your incredible support of our school and I look forward to a fantastic school year. I hope each of you has a wonderful weekend and enjoy the last remaining days of summer. Go CAPS and please take care.
