ASSIGNMENT 1 (individual)
INTRODUCTION Culture and language are intertwined. To understand culture we have to draw on many resources connected to language and non-language. In each of the scenarios, give your opinion about what kind of ‘language’ is being used in the communication context. Support your answers with theories of language use in relation to cultural behaviour.
Your answer to the scenarios should not exceed 450-500 words.
Scenario 1 A shop trader in India converses with a customer in English. He shakes his head from side to side when agreeing to a sale price.
Scenario 2 A child of South Asian background in a UK school is being reprimanded by a teacher. The teacher is looking at the floor and the teacher becomes increasingly annoyed. Finally he says, “Look at me when I am talking to you!”
Scenario 3 On receiving a call that some prospective buyers for their home are on their way, Alicia and James put on a pot of freshly ground coffee.
OTHER DETAILS Plagiarism is faulted. If you submit answers that are similar, you will be penalized. It is alright to discuss the answers in a group but you cannot submit the same answer word for word.

MARKS ALLOCATION This assignment takes up 20%. You will be marked on the understanding and explanation of cultural concepts, and the ability to use language clearly. ASSIGNMENT 2 (individual)
TASK Search on the Internet two speeches by world leaders, each form a different circle in Kahru’s model. Using a five minute portion of each speech, identify the similarities and differences in the way the different speakers use the language. What kind of inferences can you make about the cultures of the speakers?
It is to be written in 500-550 words. DO NOT PLAGIARISE.
