JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: LECTURER

GRADE: Main Grade Lecturer

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Department

RESPONSIBLE FOR: College teaching and learning activities and outcomes for students for specified subject area (s)

KEY PURPOSE: To undertake a teaching programme in a specified discipline(s) and to contribute to the fulfilment of the College’s objectives, helping to ensure that the work of a programme area of the curriculum and is of the highest quality possible and in accordance with College policies.

MAIN DUTIES

1. To undertake a teaching programme and all aspects of the teaching and learning process, including:

(i) Classroom teaching, tutorial work and associated outreach duties, residential, open and distance learning courses and student placements

(ii) All associated organisational and administrative work, preparation and marking and appropriate student welfare and academic counselling responsibilities;

(iii) Acting as a Personal Tutor to students as required and undertaking all of the associated duties including pastoral care support.

(iv) Making a full contribution to the team approach to learning and teaching.

(v) Implementing a student centred negotiated learning programme in accordance with the College’s curriculum framework.

(vi) Implementing agreed induction procedures and processes for students.

1 (vii) Ensuring that students are informed of what is expected of them at every stage of their programme and that an awareness of what the programme involves is a feature of all reviews undertaken with students.

(viii) Ensuring that appropriate assignments, tasks and activities are regularly set and assessed and that feedback is given to students in ways that will allow them to develop and achieve progression.

(ix) Contributing to the organisation of and ensure that there are appropriate work placements.

(x) Ensuring that information concerning student discipline is accessible and made available to the relevant Manager.

(xi) Working with the Head of Department and Director of Faculty to identify professional development needs related to the area.

(xii) Assisting in identifying the resources required for the programme area and planning replacement and updating as necessary.

(xiii) Contributing to the preparation of budget forecasts and helping to ensure that all budget limits are kept.

(xiv) Ensuing that the physical learning environment is well-ordered and stimulating through displays of materials, students’ work, etc.

(xv) Helping to implement the Faculty and programme areas: environmental policies.

(xvi) Developing the requirements arising out of any changes to either the curriculum or syllabus, or the standards set by any relevant external body.

2. To act as a Course Leader for designated course(s), including:

(i) Proposing the Study Programme structure, its delivery and its assessment schedule

(ii) To design innovative delivery models for each element of the Study Programme

(iii) Preparing and updating the course handbook

(iv) To ensure schemes of work are in place and effective

(v) Arranging and chairing monthly minuted meetings of the course team

(vi) Co-ordinating the review and evaluation of the course by the course team

(vii) Taking responsibility for assessment and quality monitoring, including:

- to use self-assessment to drive continuous improvement in teaching and learning - to produce the annual self-assessment report (SAR) for the course - to ensure that actions identified in the SAR and QIP are implemented within allocated resources authorised by managers - to manage internal and external verification and complete actions - ensuring that comprehensive schemes of work and sample lesson plans are checked and lodged in the Quality File - agreeing assessment schedules - agreeing and recording assessment criteria, assessments and marking schemes against requirements of the awarding body - sampling students’ work and approving assessment decisions made by all members of the team - ensuring that assessment procedures and systems conform to the awarding body requirements

(viii) Ensuring that all students on the course are correctly enrolled andare registered with the relevant awarding body

(ix) To manage the course in a way that adheres to key dates and deadlines

(x) To maintain, monitor and interpret EARASP data

(xi) To use minimal target grades where applicable to challenge learners and drive up value added achievement

(xii) To access prior attainment records so as to measure distance travelled

(xiii) To understand the processes of transfers and withdrawals and their impact on performance (xiv)

Keeping up to date records of student performance

(xv) Ensuring students – and where appropriate their parents/carers and their employers - are kept informed about their progress

(xvi) Keeping information on student destinations

(xvii) Supplying business support staff with the information needed to ensure students, in particular those aged 16-18, are provided with appropriate work placements and, where required, to organise placement visits

(xviii) Briefing and providing support to staff teaching and supporting the course and to technical staff, key workers and other staff who assist students on the course.

3. To assist the Head of Department and Director of Faculty in the management and review of the curriculum in accordance with College policies, including

(i) Implementing all college policies relating to the management of learning and teaching and quality.

(ii) Contributing to the team’s yearly curriculum plan and each member of staff’s yearly plan of action and providing appropriate records to the Head of Department. (iii) Organising and implementing agreed procedures to enable records of student attendance and progress to be kept and be accessible on demand.

(iv) Providing all data relating to examinations, statistics, assessments, entry and exit in accordance with College and Faculty practices to the Head of Department.

(v) Working with the Head of Department on the Evaluation and Review of the curriculum and its activities.

(vi) Ensuring that all student reviews are of the best possible quality.

4. To participate in liaison activities associated with the programme area and those relating to the Faculty’s and College provision.

(i) Implementing relevant employer, client, moderator, assessor and examination board links.

(ii) Contributing to all school liaison activities for the faculty and for other faculties as required.

(iii) Assisting in the delivery of Parents’, Open and Careers evenings and events.

(iv) Developing publicity materials that are to agreed standards for the area of responsibility and agreed to by the Head of Department / Director of Faculty.

(v) Attending all meetings associated with the area of work and responsibilities.

(vi) Contributing to the College Admissions Procedures.

(vii) Working with the appropriate cross college managers in the development of curriculum and learners support for all students.

5. Develop and maintain professional competence in the post and in other duties performed on behalf of the Faculty or, the College, by:

(i) Undertaking an agreed programme of professional development each year which will enhance the skills required to perform the role and responsibilities in line with IfL and QTLS requirements.

(ii) Serving on appropriate College Committees and Working Parties

(iii) Participating in regular appraisals with the line manager

(iv) Participating fully in the Observation of Teaching and Learning programme

6. General

(i) To adhere to College Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities policies and to comply with relevant legislation. (ii) To undertake any other such duties as may be reasonably required of you commensurate with your grade, at your initial place or work or at any of the other College sites as determined by the Principal.
