CONSTITUTION OF THE GCU STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINERS ASSOCIATION
Article I: Name
The name of this organization shall be the Grand Canyon University Student Athletic Trainers Association. It shall be affiliated with the Athletic Training Curriculum at GCU.
Article II: Objectives
The objectives of this organization shall be:
1. To develop and maintain standards for improvement of athletic training education and practice at Grand Canyon University.
2. The advancement, encouragement, and improvement of the athletic training profession in accordance with the standards, rules, and guidelines of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).
3. To promote better working relationships among those persons interested and involved with problems inherent in caring for the health and well being of the athlete.
4. To further develop the abilities of each of its members.
5. To serve the common interest of its members by providing a means for a fee exchange of ideas within the organization.
6. To promote legislation to protect the interests of the public and the rights of qualified persons involved in the practice of athletic training.
7. To provide such services as will further the objectives of the Association.
Article III: Membership
Section 1: There shall be three (3) classes of membership in accordance with the guidelines described in the Bylaws, Article III. The classes are: 1. Active 2. Associate 3. Honorary
Section 2: Qualifications for each class of membership and the rights, privileges, and obligations of each member are provided for in the Bylaws. Article IV: Dues
The dues for each membership classification shall be determined by the SATA members at the October meeting.
Article V: Voting Power
All active members shall be entitled to one vote upon questions submitted to the Association for nomination.
Article VI: Organization
Section 1: The governing body of the Association shall be the Executive Board.
Section 2: The Executive Board shall consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, and the faculty advisor(s) that have been preceding member officials.
Section 3: The SATA will be under the jurisdiction of the rules and regulations of Grand Canyon University.
Section 4: All Officers serving this Association must be active members of the SATA. The officers, elevation of officers, and terms of office shall be as follows:
A. President: the President shall be an upper level student athletic trainer (2nd year and/or above at time of election). B. Vice President: The Vice President shall be an upper level student athletic trainer (2nd year and/or above at time of selection). C. Secretary: The Secretary shall be at least a 1st year student athletic trainer at time of election. D. Treasurer: The Treasurer shall be at least a 1st year student athletic trainer at time of election. E. Historian: The Historian shall be at least a 1st year student athletic trainer at time of election. F. All officers are elected for a one year term.
Section 5: Removal of Officers- All Association officers may be removed from office on the following grounds: embezzlement, malfeasance in office, consecutive absences from meetings and activities, and action contrary to or in violation of this constitution and its Bylaws. Before proceedings can instituted, a brief, containing the charges, shall be drawn up and presented by a board member to the Executive Board sitting in the Executive session. The brief must then be adopted by a majority cote prior to the formal presentation of the charges. Removal of any officer can only take place during a business meeting of the SAT and shall require a two-thirds (2/3) majority of the voting membership present. Article VII: Powers and Duties of Officers
Section 1: The officers are the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian
Section 2: All powers and duties of officers are specified in the Bylaws.
Article VIII: Committees All committees, standing and special, shall be created or dissolved at the discretion of the President, with the approval of the Executive Board.
Article IX: Government
Section 1: The administration of the GCU SATA shall be entrusted to the Executive Board.
Section 2: The Executive Board shall meet in executive session prior to each meeting of the membership (a minimum of two times per year) and may meet when deemed necessary to execute the affairs of the SATA according to the Constitution and Bylaws. A quorum for an Executive Board meeting shall be a simple majority.
Section 3: A minimum of two (2) regular meetings shall be held during the school year. Additional meetings which are necessary may be called by the President of the Executive Board. Members shall be notified seven (7) days prior to the date of the meeting.
Section 4: The voting body shall be the Active members present at a regular meeting or any special meetings properly called by the president and/or Executive Board. Each member present shall be entitled to one vote. There shall be no voting by proxy.
Section 5: The Executive Board may submit items of SATA business to the voting membership for a vote by mail. Approval of items so submitted shall require a “yes” majority of a response of at least two-thirds (2/3) of the voting membership of the SATA.
Article X: Amendments to the Constitution
Section 1: All proposed amendments to the Constitution shall be submitted to the President at least 2 weeks prior to an Executive Board meeting. The Secretary shall distribute copies of the proposal to all voting members at least two weeks prior to the Executive Board meeting.
Section 2: A proposed amendment to the Constitution that has been properly submitted shall be read at the business meeting and a two thirds (2/3) majority vote of the voting membership present shall be necessary for the adoption of said Amendments.
Article XI: Amendments to the Bylaws
The Bylaws may be amended at any official meeting of the Executive Board by a majority vote. Bylaws may not be added, deleted, or amended by a mail vote or a telephone vote. BYLAWS OF THE GCU STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINERS ASSOCIATION
Article I: President
Section 1: Selection- In accordance with the Article VII, Section 4a of the Constitution.
Section 2: Term of Office- In accordance with Article VII, Section 4e of the Constitution.
Section 3: Functions and Responsibilities: 1. Serves as the official spokesman for the SATA 2. Presides at all SATA meetings and Execute Board meetings. 3. Maintains communication with other officers and all committee chairmen. 4. Serves an ex-officio member of all SATA committees.
Article II: Vice President
Section 1: Selection- In accordance with Article VII, Section 4b of the Constitution.
Section 2: Term of Office- In accordance with Article VI, Section 4e of the Constitution.
Section 3: Functions and Responsibilities: 1. Assumes the duties of the President in his/her absence. 2. Serves as a chair of the Fundraising Committee. 3. Ex officio member of all committees. 4. Chairs the membership committee. 5. In charge of public relations.
Article III: Secretary
Section 1: Selection- In accordance with Article VII, Section 4c of the Constitution.
Section 2: Term of Office- In accordance with Article VII, Section 4e of the Constitution.
Section 3: Functions and Responsibilities: 1. Serves as the custodian of all records, books and papers belonging to the association. 2. Arranges for the recording of minutes of all Executive Board meetings and SATA meetings. 3. Conducts all the official correspondence of the association. 4. Maintains an official record of the association membership. 5. Serves as an ex-officio member of all association committees. 6. Reviews the Constitution and Bylaws and makes recommendations to the Executive Board for revisions, additions or deletions
Article IV: Treasurer
Section 1: Selection- In accordance with Article VI, Section 4d of the Constitution. Section 2: Functions and responsibilities: 1. Serves as custodian of all Association monies, keeping an accurate account for all receipts and disbursements in a book which shall be the property of the chapter. 2. Report on financial status of the SATA at each SATA meeting and to the Executive Board upon request. 3. Commit the Association to no financial obligation in excess of the available financial resources. 4. Handles the financial matters of the SATA. Any bills in excess of fifty dollars ($50) shall only be paid upon approval of the Executive Board. 5. Provide the information needed of the Executive Board to conduct an audit of the books a minimum of once per year. 6. Plans a budget for the SATA for the year. Met at the beginning of the year.
Article V: Executive Board
Section 1: The Executive Board shall consist of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
Section 2: Selection- The officers shall be elected by the Association membership. The representatives from each level shall be selected by their peers.
Section 3: Terms of Office- The term of office for the Executive board is one year. A member may be re-elected in the same position for the following year.
Section 4: Functions and Responsibilities: 1. Meets prior to each SATA meeting and as deemed necessary. 2. Serves as the official governing body of the SATA. 3. Carries out the mandates and policies of the association as determined by the membership. 4. Approves appointments of all committee chairmen and standing committee members. 5. Approves appointments of all committee chairmen and standing committee members. 6. Shall report on Association activities at each SATA meeting. 7. Acts as an auditing committee for financial affair of the Association. 8. Approves budget submitted by Treasurer.
Article VI: Membership Committee
Section 1: The vice president shall be the chair of committee and shall select members of the committee subject of the approval of the Executive Board.
Section 2: Conduct a thorough annual review of the Constitution and Bylaws and make recommendations to the Executive Board for any additions, deletions, and/or changes.
Article VIII: Membership Provisions
Section 1: Active Members
1. Shall be those individuals listed in the athletic training curriculum (consisting of the four techniques classes) and optional for those that have finished the curriculum, yet are till involved in the athletic-training program. 2. Have the right to vote. 3. May be nominated for an office or chairperson of a special committee. 4. May participate in all the activities that the organization sponsors. 5. Shall honor the Constitution and By-laws of the GCU-SAT 6. Shall pay any dues or assessments levied by the association by the due date.
Section 2: Associate Members
1. Shall be those individuals involved in the athletic training curriculum having university faculty or staff status. 2. Shall not have voting privileges. 3. May not be nominated for an office, but may be chairperson of a special committee. 4. May participate in activities that the organization sponsors. 5. Shall honor the Constitution and Bylaws of the GCU-SATA.
Section 3: Honorary Members: 1. Shall be those individuals for the community in agreement with the objectives of the association and expressing a desire to become a member. 2. Shall not have voting privileges. 3. May not be nominated for an office or chairperson of a special committee. 4. May participate in activities that the organization sponsors. 5. Honor the constitution and bylaws of the GCU-SATA. 6. Shall be approved for membership by the executive committee- (simple majority)
Article IX: Dues
The amount of the (semester/yearly) dues and the date due, shall be determined by the members at the September meeting.
Article X: Suspension and Reinstatement of Membership
Section 1: A member of the GCU-SATA can be suspended for the following: a. fail Grand Canyon University – Office of Student Life Club/Organization Charter Process Sheet
The following conditions must be met in order for a Student Organization to be recognized on campus:
HOW TO BECOME AN ORGANIZATION
1. Write a brief explanation of why the organization should be formed and the benefits to the University community. 2. Obtain an advisor for the organization. Advisors must be a current faculty or staff member of the University. 3. Petition 1% (15 students) of the student body to indicate support for the proposed organization. (The petition form is attached to this packet). 4. Develop a constitution/bylaws or a similar document that outlines your organization’s operating structure. (A sample constitution is enclosed). 5. Submit all paperwork to the Student Development or the ASGCU, Student Development Manager, & Executive Director of Student Life. The decision process will be completed within 10 business days.
HOW TO CHANGE A STUDENT ORGANIZATION
1. A new constitution must be written following the guidelines of the ASGCU sample constitution. 2. Notify the Student Development Manager regarding the change in the organization’s structure. 3. Submit an official request and the newly amended constitution to the Student Development Manager or the ASGCU Vice President.
