BOARD OF EDUCATION SPECIAL MEETING SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE 35 FIFTH STREET JUNE 26, 2008 6:00 P.M.

Meeting called to order: The meeting was called to order 6:19 p.m. in the Superintendent’s Conference Room, 35 Fifth Street, Derby, Connecticut.

Opening Ceremonies: All rose and recited pledge of allegiance

Roll Call:

Present: Sheila Parizo, Margo Bondi, Kim Kreiger, Jodi Chevarella, Ken Marcucio. There was a quorum. Rebecca O’Hara arrived at 6:35 p.m. Absent: Brad Tobin and Jim Stadt.

Also present: Superintendent Dr. Stephen Tracy and Nancy O’Dea-Wyrick – Business Manager

Public Portion: No one from the public wished to address the Board.

Insurance: Dr. Tracy gave an update regarding health insurance and potential savings from combining risk pools with the City. He and Nancy O’Dea-Wyrick met with the Mayor and Phil Robertson 6/23. Dr. Tracy explained that his goals in this conversation are 1) to meet the District’s contractual obligations with our employees, 2) to save money wherever possible, and 3) to be fair and be competitive in our dealings with insurance carriers and brokers. Ms. O’Dea- Wyrick then explained that per Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, potential savings resulting from combining the “risk pools” for the City and the District would be approximately $76,000 of which 2/3 would go to the City and 1/3 to the BOE. No savings would be gleaned by using one broker as originally thought although bidding brokers is something for future consideration. The city is not sure that the risk pools should be combined at this time and will let us know. No action is required at this point. Dr. Tracy will report back on this matter after further consultation with City officials.

Executive Session: Motion by Kim Kreiger, seconded by Rebecca O’Hara, that the Board go into executive session inviting Dr. Tracy to discuss personnel and inviting Nancy O’Dea-Wyrick for the first portion of the discussions, all in favor, motion carried.
