(ES) ELECTRICAL SAFETY

SUBJECT: Electrical Safety

CURRENT REVISION: 08/24/10

POLICY: The following safety precautions will be followed at all times when electrical devices are utilized. All personnel will be responsible for assessing the condition of electrical equipment in their use.

PROCEDURE:

General Safety: Electrical devices will be protected from wet floors.

All electrical equipment will be placed on hard, flat surfaces. At no time will electrical equipment be placed on a bed. This includes but is not limited to: nebulizer compressors, air mattress pumps, etc. A mattress pump may be hung from the end of a bed provided it does not rest on the bed linens. Do not use towels, blankets, etc under electrical equipment. At no time will electrical equipment be used in a drawer.

The frame of electrically operated equipment identified by the manufacturer as requiring grounding, is grounded.

Prompt repairs will be made to any electrical equipment from which a "shock is felt." When operating a piece of equipment and a Ashock is felt,@ tag the item as Adefective,@ remove from service and notify Maintenance through CPSI. Indicate location of equipment and specify equipment problems.

Care is to be maintained when connecting and disconnecting electrical equipment. Switch to "off" position before connecting or disconnecting.

Do not disconnect the plug from the wall by grasping the power cord. Grasp the plug itself and disconnect.

Report and remove from service any device that has been dropped, abused, had liquid spilled on it or has evidence of overheating.

Discontinue use of equipment that has any wire or power cord that shows fraying, extreme wear, cut in insulation or evidence of burning. Report same by tagging item as Adefective@ and notify Maintenance through CPSI. Indicate location of equipment and specify equipment problems.

When lights don’t work:

When a light bulb isn’t working, contact the Environmental Services Department through the facility intranet, using a work-request.

When a defective light bulb (including fluorescents) is changed, the following safety steps will be followed: 1. Only a non-conductive ladder will be used. 2. Electrical power to the light unit will be turned off. 3. If a breaker needs to be turned off (in stairwells and other areas where no light switch is available), the Engineering staff will be contacted to assist.

When light fixtures need to be cleaned, contact Environmental Services, using a Work Request on the facility intranet.

When a light fixture is cleaned, the following steps will be followed: 1. Only a non-conductive ladder will be used (if a ladder is needed). 2. Electrical power to the light unit will be turned off. 3. If a breaker needs to be turned off (in stairwells and other areas where no light switch is available), the Engineering staff will be contacted to assist.
