Prizes for 2018 Scioto County Science Day

Team projects will be judged along with individual projects and will not be judged in a separate category at County, District or State Science Days.

All projects (Grades 5 – 12) at County, District and State Science Days will be scored using Ohio Academy of Science Categories and Criteria.

Special Recognition Awards – Five $300 awards will be given

Judging Process

ROUND 1: Students (grades 5 – 12) will be judged independently according to the Ohio Academy of Science Judging Criteria to determine a score. Judging criteria includes:  Knowledge achieved  Use of scientific method  Clarity of expression  Originality and creativity  (For team projects only) Teamwork

ROUND 2: Students’ scores from Round 1 will determine their rating (Superior, Excellent, Good or Satisfactory). Students who receive a Superior rating qualify to be judged in a second round for Special Recognition Awards; however the score they receive in first round does NOT determine who receives awards…that will be determined by the second round of judging. In the first round students are only judged for rating (not against each other). Since we are awarding prizes at the County level, the second round judges will be using the same Ohio Academy of Science Criteria, but they will be looking at how projects compare to each other.

It should also be noted that Sponsor Awards may be presented by various outside groups and organizations. Each outside group sets their own criteria (which may or may not be based on scores or ratings). Judging for Sponsor Awards can take place during either round of judging.

All students who receive a Superior Rating will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony along with those who receive Special Recognition and Sponsor Awards.

Students who receive a Superior Rating at County Science Day qualify to advance to District Science Day and have their registration fees paid by the ESC. Please be aware that the ESC does NOT register students for District Science Day; that is the responsibility of the students, teachers and/or parents. Page 2 of 2
