Nurse Practitioner – Oncology

Are you a qualified Nurse Practitioner with oncology experience, looking to share your expertise and make a difference? If so, Niagara Health’s Inpatient Medicine/Oncology department has an exciting full-time position for you in the Regional Oncology Program at the St. Catharines Site.

As a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Oncology, you will strive to promote clinical excellence, quality patient/client-centred care and high professional standards, with a focus on enhancing nursing practice and patient outcomes while working in a collaborative practice model. Your proven acute oncology clinical experience will have prepared you to assess cancer patients who have complex symptoms or whose condition is deteriorating, as well as provide complex inpatient care and discharge planning for patients admitted under an Oncologist or Oncology Internist. You will also be expected, as an Oncology Nurse Practitioner, to provide education to all stakeholders regarding post stem cell transplant care, and admission avoidance strategies, as well as participate in, or lead, other activities designed to improve care for cancer patients across the disease trajectory.

This collaborative role will involve working closely with Oncologists, Oncology Internists, inpatient and outpatient nurses, Palliative Care providers and Supportive Care staff, and in alignment with the strategic direction and ongoing development of the Niagara Health Medical Oncology unit and Walker Family Cancer Centre services.

To join our leadership team as a Nurse Practitioner – Oncology, you must be an experienced and qualified NP whose knowledge base and skill set include:

 Completion of Nurse Practitioner Program and Master in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing.  Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario - Extended Class (RN(EC)); Nurse Practitioner - Adult (NP - Adult) or Nurse Practitioner - Primary Health Care (NP-PHC) Primary Care (PC).  Certificate in Oncology (CON(C)) or Palliative Care (CHPCN(C)).  Current certification in BCLS.  A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of related acute Oncology clinical experience.  Proven ability to apply knowledge, skills and judgment to meet Nurse Practitioner Practice Standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).  Demonstrated advanced knowledge of, and experience analyzing, oncology practice in providing effective and efficient patient- and family-centred care with a high degree of autonomy.  Excellent decision-making, clinical judgement and technical skills.  Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and all members of the interprofessional team to facilitate care planning, information sharing and patient flow.  Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations.  Demonstrated ability to coach interprofessional teams in the development and communication of an integrated, patient-centred oncological plan of care.  Ability to facilitate learning and act as a mentor for interprofessional team members, identify and create a positive learning environment, and create resources, as needed, for patients, families and staff.  Demonstrated ability to provide nursing leadership, with experience as a formal or informal leader who uses critical thinking and takes initiative to advance nursing professional practice, patient/family education and interprofessional team consultation/functioning to promote patient- and family-centred care.  Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, compassion and collaboration with patients, families and all internal and external service providers and stakeholders in cancer care, and promote positive relationships with community partners.  Ability to ensure compliance with confidential requirements under the Niagara Health Privacy Policy.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn other software/computer applications need to carry out the role.  Ability to be involved in internal/external committee work and/or capacity-building initiatives and service development.  Ability to maintain consistent, regular attendance.  Ability to work independently using optimal time management skills.
