AP Literature and Composition Summer Assignment 2013-2014

Hello and welcome to AP Literature and Composition! I am pleased to see that you have chosen to challenge yourself by enrolling in this Advanced Placement course and I look forward to a fantastic year together! The first key to a successful year is to ensure you all keep practicing your critical reading skills over the summer. I would hate for your brains to atrophy! The completion of the following summer assignments is vital as we will spend the first several weeks dealing with the texts and the work you have put into them. Be sure to spread the work out over the course of the summer so that you are not stuck getting everything done in the last week.

The Assignment: 1. Read the first chapter of How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. a. This book is a fantastic guide to reading literature in an in-depth manner. You can find this book online, in most bookstores, or in library. Whether you buy or borrow this book, you should take copious notes in a binder that you will devote to this class. We will be reading chapters of the book throughout the year as they apply to different texts. Feel free to read ahead – it will definitely help! 2. Read The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. a. You should complete the “Work Analysis” assignment for this book. Due: August 15th. b. You will have an in-class essay connecting Remains to the quest (discussed in Foster’s book) during the first week of school. Please prepare accordingly. 3. Read Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. a. You should complete the “Work Analysis” assignment for this book. Due: August 15th 4. Read a book of your choice from the list below. a. I have attached a list of books that commonly appear on the AP exam that you will take in May. You are responsible for reading at least ONE of these texts over the summer. I highly recommend that you read more than the requirements. b. You should complete the “Work Analysis” assignment for this book. Due: August 15th. c. You should also write a 3-5 page essay analyzing an aspect of this novel or play. You may choose any aspect you like (ex. Theme, characterization, setting, conflict, etc.) and should use the correct MLA format. This assignment should also include a Works Cited. Due: August 15th. 5. Recommendation: During the first quarter, we will conduct our research paper unit. You will be asked to use a novel by a British author as the basis for this project. I recommend that you read and annotate the novel (from

AP English Summer Assignment 1 | P a g e the AP list) before you return to the hustle and bustle of the school year. Make sure that you distinguish the British authors from the American and World authors.

Suggestions: o Read with your pen. That is, I recommend you annotate a personal copy of each book, or that you use sticky notes to make annotations on a school copy. o Rely on your own reading and note-taking to help you understand these novels. Outside sources, while sometimes helpful in comprehension, cannot replace the reading. o Do not wait until the last minute to read these books. They are not quick reads. Give yourself a few weeks to finish them. o If you read the book early in the summer, refresh your reading before school starts. We will spend several weeks on the text and refer to it throughout the year. Your familiarity with the novel is essential.

Turnitin.com: · All written work must be submitted to turnitin.com BEFORE the end of the day August 15. · Your class is called AP English 12 (2013). o Class Code: 6526505 o Password: ENGLISH (all caps) Contact: [email protected] · Assignments should be e-mailed to the above address on or before the due date. · Feel free to e-mail me with questions about your assignment. I will try to get back to you within the week.

AP English Summer Assignment 2 | P a g e AP RUBRIC

This is the rubric that I will be using for your analytical essay as well as all of your in-class essays throughout the year. AP essays are graded on a scale of 1-9; these scores will then be translated into percentages for your gradebook. A paper that receives a + may go up 2-3 points. For example, an 8+ may go from a 93 to 95 or 96.

9 - 100pts 8 - 93 pts 7 - 88 pts 6 - 84 pts 5 - 80 pts 4 - 75 pts 3 - 70 pts 2 - 65 pts 1-60 pts

9-8 Superior papers specific in their references, cogent in their definitions, and free of plot summary that is not relevant to the question. These essays need not be without flaws, but they demonstrate the writer's ability to discuss a literary work with insight and understanding and to control a wide range of the elements of effective composition. At all times they stay focused on the prompt, providing specific support--mostly through direct quotations--and connecting scholarly commentary to the overall meaning. 7-6 These papers are less thorough, less perceptive or less specific than 9-8 papers. They are well-written but with less maturity and control. While they demonstrate the writer's ability to analyze a literary work, they reveal a more limited understanding and less stylistic maturity than do the papers in the 9-8 range. 5 Safe and "plastic," superficiality characterizes these essays. Discussion of meaning may be formulaic, mechanical, or inadequately related to the chosen details. Typically, these essays reveal simplistic thinking and/or immature writing. They usually demonstrate inconsistent control over the elements of composition and are not as well conceived, organized, or developed as the upper-half papers. However, the writing is sufficient to convey the writer's ideas, stays mostly focused on the prompt, and contains at least some effort to produce analysis, direct or indirect. 4-3 Discussion is likely to be unpersuasive, perfunctory, underdeveloped or misguided. The meaning they deduce may be inaccurate or insubstantial and not clearly related to the question. Part of the question may be omitted altogether. The writing may convey the writer's ideas, but it reveals weak control over such elements as diction, organization, syntax or grammar. Typically, these essays contain significant misinterpretations of the question or the work they discuss; they may also contain little, if any, supporting evidence, and practice paraphrase and plot summary at the expense of analysis. 2-1 These essays compound the weakness of essays in the 4-3 range and are frequently unacceptably brief. They are poorly written on several counts, including many distracting errors in grammar and mechanics. Although the writer may have made some effort to answer the question, the views presented have little clarity or coherence.
