Guide to Distributing Your Courseware on Courseware Library

ATTENTION: IF YOU ARE CONTRIBUTING COURSEWARE ON BEHALF OF A MICROSOFT BUSINESS GROUP, contact Courseware Library Project Management by e-mailing [email protected] to discuss specific requirements prior to developing courseware.

Contents Introduction Microsoft Learning’s online marketplace known as Courseware Library provides a Web platform for authors, trainers, and technical experts to publish, sell, and distribute courseware. The courseware can be purchased by training professionals who are part of the Microsoft Partner Network worldwide.

Distributing and selling your course on Courseware Library may yield several potential benefits:  You can generate revenue from your valuable content by selling to Microsoft Partner Network members.  Set your own prices in U.S. currency on your course to optimize its earning potential.  Build a global brand for your courseware within the Microsoft training community.  Grow your reputation with Microsoft Partner Network members and their instructors.  If you are a Microsoft partner with a Learning competency, then publishing and distributing courseware for IT Professional and Developer training on Courseware Library can earn KPI points in the Microsoft Partner Network Program.

 For more information about KPI points, visit https://partner.microsoft.com/global/program/competencies/complearning.

Getting Started Every course distributed on Courseware Library must comply with and remain in compliance with the requirements and obligations described in this Guide. Developing high-quality courseware is a complex, highly specialized skill. Please review the procedures and requirements carefully. They are designed to help you create courseware you can sell and distribute on Courseware Library and may reduce the time you spend revising your courseware.

Courseware Requirements Each course must meet basic requirements in the following areas:  Content quality  Technical and format standards  Subject matter requirements These requirements are described and listed in this document. Content Quality Certification Each course must meet the standards and requirements listed in this guide. In addition, each course must successfully complete and pass the quality review test performed by the Microsoft-authorized test vendor to be eligible for distribution on Courseware Library.

2 As the course provider, you are responsible for paying all fees and costs related to the testing of your course. Testing fees vary depending on your course, and typically run between $495 to $995 for initial testing of a course. For updates and revisions to your course, the fees range from $100 to $995. There are additional testing fees if your course includes build guides for virtual machines. All fees are due to the testing provider upon submission of your course for testing. Please confirm pricing with the testing provider. If your course meets all requirements and passes the quality review test, the testing provider will provide you with a report on your course performance, and will upload your course to Courseware Library for publication. If your course fails the quality review test, you will receive a report from the testing provider that describes changes that you must make. All courses, updates, and revisions must pass the quality review test to be eligible for distribution on Courseware Library.

Quality Review Criteria The quality review will assess courses based on criteria and standards in the table below. Not all of the standards are required for every course. Typically, courses that use these criteria and adhere to some or all of the standards will be of acceptable quality.

Table 2 - Quality Review Criteria Criteria Standards Standard Courseware Components Each course should have the typical components for instructor-led training courses. Not every course will include every component, and some courses may include non-standard components. If a course varies from the standard components, the instructor manual and content should clearly explain what components are included and how they should be used in the course. Typical courseware components include:  Syllabus.  A student handbook (courseware materials for the students).  Trainer preparation guide. (This is also known as the classroom setup guide.)  Instructor manual (courseware materials for the instructors).  Lab answer keys and/or solutions.  PowerPoint Slides to support course content delivery.

3  Assessments.  An End User License Agreement at the beginning of the course.  Copyright notice.  Course support contact information, including name, e-mail address, contact information, and website URL. Accuracy and Depth Courseware must be technically accurate. The content must be of appropriate depth for the intended audience. The courseware should follow accepted instructional design standards for relevancy and structure. The classroom scenario described in the required Trainer Preparation Guide, will be tested with each lab exercise to ensure accuracy. Course objectives must be clearly stated and labs must match with a corresponding course objective for relevancy. Each course objective must be consistent with the course’s intended audience and the stated technical depth of the course. Security Courseware should not include content or advice that conflicts with Microsoft guidelines for trustworthy computing. http://www.microsoft.com/about/twc/en/us/defa ult.aspx Instructional Design and Context Instructional design of courseware should follow principles of the Cognitive Domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning: 1. Knowledge – Is the content presented so that the learner can recall the new information? 2. Comprehension – Are the course concepts reinforced to help the learner understand the new information? 3. Application – Does the course provide real world examples to inspire the learner to apply the new information? 4. Analysis -- Does the course content facilitate the learner’s ability to break down the new information into its component parts?

4 5. Synthesis (create) – Do the course quizzes and tests adequately assess the learner’s ability to take the new information and create something new from it (write a program, solve a problem, or streamline a process)? Prerequisites and Target Audience Prerequisites for the course are defined. Prerequisites are appropriate for the course. The target audience for the course is clearly defined. The defined target audience is an appropriate match to the content. Course Objectives The course objectives are clearly stated and easy to find. Content Readability The courseware is free of grammatical and spelling errors. Any spelling errors or gross errors in grammar will be sufficient to fail the course. Courses with minor errors in grammar, where learning is not impeded, may be allowed to pass. The style of writing engages the learner appropriately. Courseware Navigation The labeling of graphics, illustrations, photos, tables, and charts appropriately identify the content taught in each of these elements. The courseware includes an accurate table of contents. The courseware headings accurately reflect the content covered. Accurate summaries are used to reinforce the content for each section. The courseware includes an accurate glossary (terms discussed are proper for the course and correctly defined). The overall layout of the course does not distract from the content. Content Style The level of difficulty represented by the content is appropriate for the target audience. (For example, beginner level content for information workers; or advanced content for Web developers.) The courseware content uses examples appropriately to help clarify the content.

5 When used, visual aids such as graphics, illustrations, or photos are effective and appropriate. Courseware language is clear and concise. Course headings accurately reflect the content covered. Accurate summaries are used to reinforce content for each section. The course content is logically structured. All terminology and definitions are used correctly and consistently. All cross-references are accurate. All acronyms are correct and defined in first instance for each section. Use of examples is appropriate and helps clarify content. Use of trademarks or logos does not detract from the learning experience. The course does not contain any third-party advertising. Practical Experience When the courseware contains written exercises or lab exercises, they are: • Relevant to the course objectives. • Clearly written and easy to follow. • Work as intended without technical difficulty. • Accurate reflections of the instructional content. • Sufficient to practice the skills in the course. • Practical and useful. • Labs match corresponding course objectives. Testing When the course contains a pretest, it accurately reflects the course objectives (or the course content if no objectives are used). When the course contains a post-test, it accurately reflects the course objectives (or course content if no objectives are used). The post-test provides useful feedback for the student. If the course contains quizzes for sections, modules, or other units of content, they

6 accurately reflect the course objectives (or course content if no objectives are used). Teachability The courseware includes guidance comprehensive enough to prepare the instructor to teach the course. Typical recommended components for the instructor include: • Trainer preparation guide with guidance on how to teach the course. • Setup guide with guidance on how to setup the labs and classroom. • Instructor notes with guidance on how to present materials. • Defined target audience. • Course prerequisites. • Lesson quizzes. • Relevant pretests and post-tests. Compliance Courseware must comply with the Courseware Library Terms of Use and the Course Provider Agreement. Microsoft trademarks comply with the General Microsoft Trademark Guidelines listed on www.Microsoft.com Geopolitical guidance It is difficult to design a course for everyone in the world who might use it. To make your courseware acceptable to more customers, it helps to recognize and avoid common geopolitical issues. • Use consistent terminology. • Respect cultural and local sensitivity. Create content that does not incorporate slang, jargon, colloquial expressions, or culture- specific metaphors. • Respect cultural sensitivity in art and multimedia. Content should not use art or multimedia that does not have global meaning.

7 Virus abatement All courseware files submitted must be scanned with the Microsoft Security Essentials tool or equivalent, and the course must not contain any viruses, spyware, malicious software, hidden content or other unauthorized, hidden, or harmful programs.

Subject Matter Requirements Courseware Library is a marketplace platform for you to distribute and sell your courseware that fills gaps and extends the portfolio of Official Microsoft Learning Products (OMLP) and Microsoft Official Courses (MOC). Courseware that covers 50% or more of the same subject matter as any existing or planned OMLP or MOC courseware, whether the 50% is covered in one course or in multiple courses in sequence or as a collection by the same author, is not eligible for distribution on Courseware Library. To learn what OMLP and MOC courseware is currently offered or planned, review the Microsoft Learning Training Catalog. Courseware Provider/Author Profile and Contact Information As the owner of the courseware, you are responsible for providing technical and customer support for your courseware. You are required to provide a profile that includes information about you and/or your company, as well as contact information where users of your courseware can contact you for technical and customer assistance. The Courseware Provider/Author Profile template is provided on the Microsoft Learning Author Portal.

11 Distributing your Course on Courseware Library Becoming a vendor When you submit a proposed syllabus for a new course, Microsoft Learning will determine if you are an approved vendor. If you are not, Microsoft will contact you with information on how to become a vendor. You must become a Microsoft approved vendor to publish and distribute your course on Courseware Library. To become a Microsoft approved vendor, you complete and submit a vendor application form and the vendor registration form provided by Microsoft. You will be provided with a vendor registration form that explains in detail how to obtain a US federal identification number. It also contains information about any other U.S. Government tax forms you might be required to complete. This is typically a one-time process. The vendor approval process typically is complete within 2-4 weeks. If you are approved as a vendor, you will receive your Microsoft vendor identification number that you will use when distributing and selling your course(s) on Courseware Library.

Submitting Courseware Proposals For each course you wish to distribute on Courseware Library, you are required to: Step 1: Complete and Send the Courseware Submission and Courseware Library Syllabus Forms 1. Download the Courseware Library Submission Form template – CWLib_Submission_Form.xlsx. 2. Download the Microsoft Courseware Library Syllabus template – CWLib_Course_Syllabus.docx. 3. Complete these forms, providing your contact information and all of the required data. 4. E-mail [email protected] and attach both completed forms to the e-mail. 5. DO NOT send courseware materials, files, or content. 6. Use the following template for your e-mail:

To: [email protected] Subject: New Courseware Library Submission – Title of Course

I would like to distribute the following course on Courseware Library. This e-mail includes my completed syllabus and submission forms, but does not include my course or any course materials. I have reviewed and will comply with the authoring and publishing requirements located on the Courseware Library Authoring site http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=205611.

I understand that my course must successfully complete the testing process (including

12 passing the quality test) before my course is eligible for distribution on the Courseware Library.

 Course Title: (The title of your course)  Course Language: (Such as English)  Length of Course: 1 day-5 days.  Author Name: (Author of the course)  Author E-mail: (Author’s e-mail)  Country in which the courseware provider is based: (your country)  Is this a new course or an update or revision of a published course? (New/Update/Revision)

Step 2: Receive your course number If your course topic is eligible for distribution on Courseware Library, you will receive a reply in approximately two business days. Microsoft Learning will assign a unique Courseware Library course number that will be used to identify your course on Courseware Library. You are required to use this number when naming your course files and your course packages, as explained in the requirements. The Courseware Library unique course number belongs to Microsoft and may only be used when you distribute the course on Courseware Library. You must remove the Courseware Library course number from your course if it is distributed through other channels.

How course numbers work The first version of a course is always assigned the letter “A” as in 50000A. This course number, “50000” is the Courseware Library course ID number that identifies your course in Courseware Library. The “A” indicates that this is the first version of the course. Every time your course is substantially revised, it will receive a new letter (B, C, D, and so on). This indicates to the instructor that the course has changed substantially and may require some additional preparation. For example, if you added a new module or chapter to your course and resubmitted it, the course number would be 50000B.

All revisions to your course must be listed in a change log as described in the Revisions and Updates section below. All revisions must successfully pass the test performed by the quality testing vendor designated by Microsoft. Step 3: Accept the Courseware Provider Agreement For each course you distribute via Courseware Library, you will be required to sign and return to Microsoft the most recent version of the Courseware Library Course Provider Agreement. This agreement contains the terms and conditions under which you distribute and sell your course on Courseware Library.

13 Step 4: Review the Course requirements and resources Your course must meet all applicable requirements in this Guide to Distributing Your Courseware on Courseware Library to successfully pass the test and be eligible for distribution on Courseware Library.

Important: If your course does not meet these requirements for quality and content, it will fail the test. There may be additional fees to resubmit your course for retesting.

When you feel your course is compliant with these requirements and you are ready to submit your course for testing, please send an email to [email protected] using the following e- mail template.

To: [email protected] Subject: Courseware Library Course #5#### Complete Course # Course Title: Vendor ID #:  I have signed and returned the Course Provider Agreement to Microsoft for the course referenced above.  My course and course content complies with all the authoring and publishing requirements located on the Courseware Library Authoring site http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=205611 and in the Course Provider Agreement.  I understand that my course must successfully complete and pass the testing process performed by the Microsoft authorized test vendor before I can distribute my course on Courseware Library.  I give Microsoft permission to share my personal information and course information with the Microsoft-authorized test vendor in order for them to contact me regarding testing my course.

Step 5: Testing Courseware Your courseware must first successfully complete and pass the test performed by a Microsoft authorized test vendor before it is eligible for listing in Courseware Library. You understand and agree that your relationship with the test vendor is directly with the test vendor and not with Microsoft. When your courseware is ready, Microsoft will provide information on how to engage with the test vendor. You will incur test fees for your course to go through the testing process. The test vendor will provide you with payment instructions and information regarding the testing process. After your course has completed the testing process, the test vendor will notify you, via e-mail, if your course passed or failed the test. If your course failed the test, the test vendor will provide you with a report listing the reasons why your course failed.

14 Important: If your course (a) complied with a minimum of 80% of the course requirements, and (b) test score showed 20% or less of missing or corrective course objectives, and you resubmit the same course for retesting within 3 months from the initial date the test vendor notifies you of your course failure, the test vendor will not charge you an additional fee to retest your course. Step 6: Receive approval and notification that your course is published The quality test vendor will notify you if your courseware passes. They will transfer your courseware into courseware Library, and typically, courses are available for purchase on Courseware Library approximately two weeks after the course passes the quality test. Microsoft will provide you with an e-mail notification when your course is available for purchase on Courseware Library at https://partnerlearning.microsoft.com

Revisions and Updates You are encouraged to make updates and revisions to improve your course based on feedback from students or instructors.

Courseware Library defines two types of changes: updates and revisions.

Updates are minor changes to content, formatting, or files. For example, correcting a heading, adding a missing step in a lab for clarity, or replacing a screenshot or image that does not display correctly.

Revisions are moderate changes to the course. For example, adding or eliminating chapters or modules, or adding new labs to the course.  A revision trains on the same version of the technology (e.g., Visual Studio 2008/.NET Framework 3.5)  A revision remains the same as to level, audience, and length (level 200, Developer, 3 days from version to version)

To propose an update or revision, skip steps 1-3 and follow steps 4-6 above. You will submit a change log with a list of proposed changes to your course to Microsoft instead of the syllabus. You will not submit the courseware files to Microsoft. The files must be submitted for review by the quality test vendor. Please check with the test vendor regarding the fees to test your updates or revisions. The test vendor will test your changes and notify you if your changes passed or failed the test. If your changes passed the test, the test vendor will transfer your course to the Courseware Library.

To submit updates or revisions 1. List all revisions and updates in a change log. Use the change log template in the appendix to prepare the list of changes. Send this to [email protected] for review. 2. Name the change log file according to the naming conventions. For example, 54646A- ENU_changelog.pdf 3. Add the change log file to your courseware package zip file. 4. After Microsoft reviews the change log, resubmit your entire course to the quality test vendor with files that have changed and files that have not changed.

15 If your course substantially changes from its original version, it will be considered a new course. Substantial changes include covering a new version of the technology, covering new features, addressing a new audience, or changes in course length.

For a new course, you must complete and submit new course proposal and syllabus forms and sign a new Course Provider Agreement.

Below are some guidelines for determining whether your course changes are considered updates, revisions, or a new course:
