Note: Attempt six questions in all. Q. No. 1 is compulsory.

1. Answer any five of the following (limit your answer in 50 words). (3x5=15) a) Distinguish between External and Internal center less grinding. b) Differentiate between Electrochemical machining and Electric discharge machining. c) Distinguish between machinability and tool life. d) What do you mean by tool signature for a single point cutting tool? e) What are the advantages of surface treatment of cutting tools? f) Differentiate between punching and blanking. g) Differentiate between cup drawing and deep drawing. h) Briefly mention process capabilities of ultrasonic machining.

2. Draw Merchant’s force circle diagram? Derive an expression for power required in metal cutting and derive Merchant’s shear angle relationship. (9) 3. a) In Taylor’s tool life exponent n=0.5 and constant c=400, what will be the percentage increase tool life when cutting speed is reduced to half. (5) b) Discuss the application and advantages of following tool materials: (4) i) Cemented carbides ii) Tin coated high speed steel

4. A laser beam with a power intensity of 2x105 w/nm2 is used to drill a 0.2 mm diameter through hole in a tungsten sheet of 0.4 mm thickness. If the efficiency of the operation is only 10%, calculate the time required. (9)

5. What are the modes of material removal in electron beam machining? Also discuss the application areas and limitation of this process. (9)

6. How do you classify the methods of Joining plastic? Discuss the different resins and adhesives, their application and limitations. (9)

7. With neat sketches discuss the compound, combination and progressive dies. Also discuss different type of punches used in combination with the above dies. (9)

8. How do you explain the philosophy of JUST in time (JIT)? Also discuss the concept of ZD production.
