BILL McKIVOR CTCC #3 PO BOX 46135 SEATTLE, WA 98146 (206) 244-8345 Let it ring------E-Mail [email protected] WEB SITE------bookmark www.thecoppercorner.com THE COPPER CORNER January-March 2007 “Something for Everyone” 18th Century “CONDER” TOKENS------17TH Century tokens—19th Century tokens Evasions, Unofficial Farthings, Medals, medalets, unusual historical items---- LIST #47 POTATO CHIPS AND CRISPS---- Hi Friends----In the US, they are called Potato Chips---and in the UK, Crisps. However if you were to go to buy them, the price would be about the “same” a $1 bag is a £1 bag------and a meal that is $8 here is about £8 in the UK. It is seen by the above examples that folks in the UK seem to pay out about double what we do, but their incomes are generally to that level as well. The prices paid are normal to a citizen of the UK. To them a pound is a pound, and to us a dollar is a dollar---thus when buying British goods our dollar is only worth 50 cents. The weakness of the dollar, combined with the rising prices for coins and tokens, gives us a bit of pause. Major collections sold recently have been sold in the UK---where the pound is strong, bringing the best price to the seller. At the latest sale, 13 December at DNW, prices realized were high. I bid well over the high estimate on the few better lots, but did not win any of them. The market is well, it seems, despite the high prices and the value of the dollar. At this writing it is $1.97+ to the pound. In my wanderings about the UK I have found prices for common material to be well over what we are used to in the USA. In days past, a £25 EF, at $1.60 to the pound, would have been $40 here. Today, at nearly $2.00 the same piece would be $50. Most of the slightly better EF pieces are seen at £35, ($70), and rarities higher. I found most UNC Spence tokens, for instance, to be at least £100, ($200) and up. Large sales of rarities at auctions have slowed for the time being as well—and one British dealer said to me, “I cannot replace what I have when sold”--- and neither can I---at least not at prices that I have paid in the past. Buying good material has been a challenge!! Enjoy looking---Bill 18th Century Token Coinage as Catalogued by Dalton and Hamer. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE AMERSHAM 2a 1797 Musical instruments/wreath, “peace” &c.
