Constitution and Terms of Reference

1 Purpose and scope

The Committee advises the Vice-Chancellor on designations of staff as Reader or Professor, and of Emeritus Readers, Emeritus Professors and Visiting Professors.

2 Terms of reference

.1 To determine and promulgate arrangements for the exercise of the powers delegated by and in accordance with criteria specified by the Academic Board in respect of Readerships and Professorships (including Emeritus and Visiting Professorships).

.2 To give initial consideration (as Stage 1 of the process) to applications from staff for designation as Reader or Professor, and to decide whether applications merit consideration by External Assessors (Stage 2).

.3 To advise on the appointment of External Assessors and whether any other advice should be sought, and on whether an application should be progressed for detailed consideration by a Stage 3 Sub-Committee

.4 To advise the Vice-Chancellor, through Stage 3 Sub-Committees, on the designation of staff as Reader or Professor, including the title to be attached to the designation.

.5 To advise the Vice-Chancellor on conferment of the title of Reader Emeritus, Professor Emeritus and the title of Visiting Professor in accordance with criteria specified by Academic Board.

.6 To ensure that Academic Board is kept informed of conferments made, and to keep Academic Board apprised of any relevant matters coming within the Committee’s purview.

3 Constitution

.1 The constitution of the Readerships and Professorships Conferment Committee is:

(a) the Vice-Chancellor, ex officio (Chair);

(b) the person with the Vice-Chancellor’s delegated responsibility for co-ordination of research policy and activity across the University;

(c) the person with the Vice-Chancellor’s delegated responsibility for academic quality and teaching and learning across the University;

(d) three members of academic staff appointed by Academic Board from amongst the

D:\Docs\2018-04-04\0fcdf9663cdb507edc859db3e7c8932a.doc1 Professors in the University having held the title of Professor (either at Coventry or elsewhere) for three years or more. The period of appointment is four years, renewable;

(e) up to two persons external to the University (which may include Professors Emeritus) having a wide experience of appointment of Professors and Readers, appointed by the Vice-Chancellor on advice of the Committee, and chosen so as to provide the Committee with an appropriate balance of experience from across the broad range of the University’s work. The period of appointment is three years, renewable.

.2 The Committee is responsible for Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the process for consideration of applications from staff for readerships or Professorships, and for all aspects of the process for Readers Emeritus, Professors Emeritus and Visiting Professors.

.3 Stage 3 of the process for consideration of applications from staff for readerships or Professorships is the responsibility of an ad hoc Sub-Committee comprising:

(a) the Vice-Chancellor, ex officio (Chair);

(b) the person with the Vice-Chancellor’s delegated responsibility for co-ordination of research policy and activity across the University;

(c) the person with the Vice-Chancellor’s delegated responsibility for academic quality and teaching and learning across the University;

(d) two of the three internal members involved at Stage 1;

(e) two of the External Assessors involved in Stage 2 appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, after consultation with the Committee.

.3 Total Membership of the Committee = 7; quorum = 4 (to include the Vice-Chancellor)

Stage 3 Sub-Committee Membership = 7 (including 2 External Assessors); quorum = 5 (including at least 1 External Assessor and the Vice-Chancellor).

4 Administrative arrangement and notes

.1 Conduct of Meetings will be in accordance with the procedures and notes for guidance promulgated by the Secretary to the Committee.

.2 Meetings are normally expected to take place to consider applications from staff for designation as Reader or Professor and nominations for Readers Emeritus, Professors Emeritus and Visiting Professors, as they are received.

.3 The Secretary is designated by the Vice-Chancellor.
