TITLE: CULINARY ARTS TEACHER

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Hourly

REPORTS TO: Unit Director

HOURS: 15-19 hours per week, between the hours of 2-8pm

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Culinary Arts Teacher is responsible for overseeing the delivery of a nutritional enrichment program. The Culinary Arts Teacher has the willingness and ability to teach high school students the skills of culinary curriculum. The Program Assistant plans, develops, implements, and evaluates daily programs and activities.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:  Maintain and operate the club in accordance with the standards of the organization and Boys & Girls Club of America.  Communicate the vision, mission, and program objectives of Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County and the national movement to staff, parents, members and the community served by the club.  Establish a regular work schedule and regular program schedule.  Responsible for teaching ServSafe, sanitation, nutrition, culinary skills, career opportunities and etc. to high school students wishing to pursue a career as a culinary chef/head cook.  Responsible for teaching students food preparation, food production, and the overall structure and work flow of a kitchen.  Responsible for following curriculum guidelines and leading and training others.  Responsible for working with diverse students and their cultural needs.  Responsible for teaching students about supplies and equipment used in the culinary arts field.  Responsible for teaching students about quality and cost containment standards.  Responsible for teaching students about inventory, supplies, culinary facilities, pricing, menu planning, safety guidelines, and sanitation issues that arise in the restaurant business.  Maintain a work based learning atmosphere.  Make industry connections promoting service learning, cooperative education, and work base learning opportunities for the high school students. 1 of 2 Revised and updated 11/13/2014 Culinary Arts Teacher  Manage work hours outside the normal work day required periodically for purpose of providing additional learning experiences for the students in catering and hosting events.   Conduct small and large group sessions for high school students.  Assist in promoting, recruiting, and stimulating membership in the club via: word-of-mouth, flyers, presentations to the neighborhood schools, churches, and community based organizations and City Governance.  Provide direct supervision of members ages 6-18.  Provide mentorship and guidance services to club members.  Establish a program setting that ensures the health and safety of members.  Contribute to the overall positive and safe club climate for youth development.  Track and report records of participation for administration and grant reports.  Manage assigned supplies and equipment.  Assist with club cleanliness, maintenance, and operations of assigned facilities, and club vans.  Attendance at all staff meetings.  Attendance at required trainings.  Complete the Youth Development Professional courses on BGCA Spillett University.  Transport members in vans and/or personal vehicles as requested and in accordance with the club safety policy.  May consult with parents concerning member and clubhouse issues.  May consult with community partners and agencies through grants and special projects.  Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Training and experience in culinary arts.  Required Education: High School diploma or GED and two years experience in working with high school students and knowledge of youth development.  Understanding of and experience in teaching leadership and teamwork skills.  Possession of a ServSafe safety and sanitation certificate.  The Culinary Arts Teacher must have the ability to motivate youth, manage behavior problems, ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth. The Culinary Arts Teacher must have the ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.  Must have current CPR/First Aid Certification or be willing to be certified through B&GCFC offered training.  The ability to speak languages other than English is valuable.  A valid Driver’s License and clean driving record and willing to travel to the rural community of Orange Cove, CA twice each week.  Must be 21 years old.

SALARY RANGE: $15.00 per hour

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employee must have own transportation, a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and be willing to transport youth as required; must be able to drive to any Club site; must be able to walk and lift groceries and boxes required for delivery of materials. Some demonstration of physical activities will be required in this position and must pass background check. Working in a kitchen involves exposure to some unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and unpleasant odors. A Culinary Arts Teacher should be able to life 25 pounds and be fit enough to stand and/or walk during the work day.
