#47 Compare nationalism in the following pairs: China and Japan, Egypt and Italy, Pan-Africanism and the Indian Congress Movement. 1750-1914

 China and Japan:

 In China there were many revolts and rebellions that led up to the rise of nationalism, where as in Japan there was not.

 Japan’s nationalism brought back some of the old culture that was enforced by the government group called the Teiseito

 On the other hand China went with moving forward and was trying to get away from the past.

 Both of them wanted to eliminate the foreign threats in their country.

 Japan did not want any influence from outside cultures but still was anyway.

 In China they went to other countries that had already been through the process for help.

 Egypt and Italy:

 Both countries were occupied by foreign nations before they became independent.

 When there were uprising in Egypt they took over the government because they did not want to lose the Suez Canal.

 From here the Egyptians were not happy being controlled by the British.

 In 1922 the Egypt gained its independence from Britain.

 The main event that started the want for nationalism was the Franco-Austrian war.

 In Italian Revolutionary named Garibaldi led a group of people to take over Sicily and then started with the rest of Italy.

 Then by 1871 the nation of Italy was formed.

 Pan-Africanism and the Indian Congress Movement:

 Indian was controlled by the British Raj at the time.  When Gandhi came he weakened the British control with the satyagrapha.

 There was never any violence with these campaigns.

 During World War Two the tensions between British and India went up.

 India was not cooperating with the British but after the war it died down and nationalism started back up.

 Most of Africa was under European control.

 The First World War devastated Africa. (both were influenced by wars)

 After the war Marcus Garvey and W. E. B. Du Bois were some of the national leaders that led to the development of the pan-African organizations.

 By the end of the time period there was still a lot of British control in the governments.
