Drew Cuttic

#47 Compare nationalism in the following pairs: China and Japan, Egypt and Italy, Pan-Africanism and the Indian Congress Movement. 1750-1914

China and Japan:

In China there were many revolts and rebellions that led up to the rise of nationalism, where as in Japan there was not.

Japan’s nationalism brought back some of the old culture that was enforced by the government group called the Teiseito

On the other hand China went with moving forward and was trying to get away from the past.

Both of them wanted to eliminate the foreign threats in their country.

Japan did not want any influence from outside cultures but still was anyway.

In China they went to other countries that had already been through the process for help.

Egypt and Italy:

Both countries were occupied by foreign nations before they became independent.

When there were uprising in Egypt they took over the government because they did not want to lose the Suez Canal.

From here the Egyptians were not happy being controlled by the British.

In 1922 the Egypt gained its independence from Britain.

The main event that started the want for nationalism was the Franco-Austrian war.

In Italian Revolutionary named Garibaldi led a group of people to take over Sicily and then started with the rest of Italy.

Then by 1871 the nation of Italy was formed.

Pan-Africanism and the Indian Congress Movement:

Indian was controlled by the British Raj at the time. When Gandhi came he weakened the British control with the satyagrapha.

There was never any violence with these campaigns.

During World War Two the tensions between British and India went up.

India was not cooperating with the British but after the war it died down and nationalism started back up.

Most of Africa was under European control.

The First World War devastated Africa. (both were influenced by wars)

After the war Marcus Garvey and W. E. B. Du Bois were some of the national leaders that led to the development of the pan-African organizations.

By the end of the time period there was still a lot of British control in the governments.
