Module Description This module provides an overview of the field of Instructional Technology in the context of practical applications. Although "technology" is usually associated with equipment such as computers, video cameras, etc., the emphasis of this course is on the “conceptualizing” of technology. This module will take technology more broadly as the systematic application of knowledge to solve practical problems, and takes the hardware/software as the products and tools of technology. Initial module topics include foundations, theories, and research in instructional technology. In this module, you will work individually and collaboratively to examine concepts, questions, and issues that define the field, and to apply this knowledge in your current teaching and learning environments. A variety of instructional methodologies and technological tools will be used. Module Objectives The focus of this module is to introduce you to important issues that help define the field of instructional technology in tertiary education and to initiate or sustain their use in your teaching. More specifically, you will 1. Define key concepts and domains in the field of instructional technology 2. Examine theories of learning and instruction, exploring implications, for the use of instructional technology tools in teaching. 3. Explore contemporary issues in instructional technology. 4. Investigate significant documents in instructional technology including different standards; 5. Explore instructional design models; 6. Examine the potential and limitations of instructional technology use in university teaching and learning 7. Research at least one current instructional technology topic or theme in depth, and collaboratively develop and deliver a presentation. Assignments

Reading Responses Each student will write short responses (250-500 words) to the required readings. Each one will choose 3 readings from the list to respond. The word count is a GUIDELINE, and is only meant to indicate that your response need not be a full essay. Rather, it should be your impressions about the readings/sites, your questions, things you agree/disagree with, etc. All responses should be submitted to the module facilitator by 30th December 2012.

2. Web Evaluation & Presentation You are required to carry out an evaluation of a selected educational web site relevant to one of the modules you teach, using your own evaluation rubrics. Submit your evaluation by 30th December 2012

3. Collaborative Instructional Unit for an instructional technology topic In small groups, you will collaboratively plan, develop, and deliver an integrated unit of study addressing one of the 5 domains of the field. The topic of your unit can be an introduction and/or overview of the domain. Or it can be one particular area of your interest and a more detailed exploration of the area. Recommended Texts
