How Osmocote Works

Each Osmocote prill consists of a water-soluble fertilizer granule with a semi-permeable resin coating. This coating permits water to penetrate the prill and dissolve the fertilizer nutrients encapsulated in the prill. Three major elements – nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) - are contained in each Osmocote granule. When the level of these elements drops in the soil surrounding the plants’ root systems, the osmosis-based technology releases fresh nutrient replacements evenly through the coating and into the soil promoting greener, healthier plants. The release of nutrients varies according to changes in soil temperature. More nutrients are released during warmer, active growing periods and less in cooler, inactive periods.

The patented technology of Osmocote’s resin coating is the key to slowing the nutrient release to allow for four month feeding. Here is an illustration of Osmocote in action:
