Work Station Migration Information

Granite School District’s Information Systems Department is undergoing the task of migrating all workstations in the District to a new Network Operating System and Desktop Management system. The intent of this document is to distribute information about that project.

Q: What advantages will I get from this migration?

Response: a. Each user will have more storage space b. Each user’s (My documents) directory on their workstation will be replicated to the server and backed up regularly. c. You can log on to any computer in the district with your username and password and gain access to your files. d. When you move schools or work locations your files do not need to be moved. The structure of the new system is such that you just logon the same way you did from your old location and you have all your files. e. Every computer is kept current with application software and operating system updates. f. Every computer is kept up to date with current antivirus software. g. Users of WebNetworks (MyGSD) can view and retrieve their files from any location using the portal. h. Once a user logs on to a workstation we can pass information to applications that are aware of the Microsoft login information and automatically run the applications. i. The new environment enables the help desk to assist you with remote connectivity capabilities to your workstation.

Q: Why are we changing from Novell to Microsoft as our Network Operating System?

Response: Novell has changed its supported Operating System to Linux which doesn’t work with many of our software applications. Microsoft is more becoming the prominent system.

Q: What is being installed on my computer?

Response: All computers in the district will need to have a new desktop management agent, called LANDesk installed on it

Q: Why do I need to have LANDesk when I may not have before?

Response: LANDesk has many functions. With this product we can make sure all district computers are updated with the latest operating system and software updates from Microsoft. We can also make sure each computer has the most current versions of SOPHOS the anti-virus software used by the district. With LANDesk we can push applications to the workstations instead of having to send personnel to sit down at the computer and install the software. This direction is meant to be a more productive and cost saving method of managing the computers in the district. LANDesk also allows us to inventory all the computers for what hardware they have, what operating system it is running, what software is on the computer and how often the software is used. This can be valuable if we are ever challenged as a district for any copyright questions. This software also allows us to access the computer remotely to trouble shoot computer problems.

Q: Does this software tracks how I use my computer, I feel that I am being watched.

Response: Neither LANDesk, the Microsoft Network or Desktop operating systems track how a person uses their computer on the internet. The intent of the LANDesk and Microsoft deployment is to provide better support and software distribution. However, all traffic from every workstation in the district is logged in the districts data center located at the GEC and can be accessed for research purposes in the event any improper computer use is brought to the attention of Granite District Police for investigation purposes. This has always been the case and is not affected by this change.

Q: How will this migration affect my work?

Response: Every workstation does have to be touched for the migration to take place

Q: What is being done as part of this migration?

Response: In General: A. Every user that has files on the existing Novell Servers in the School will have their files moved to the new Server which resides in the Data Center at the GEC. (M:) B. Computer’s will have the LANDesk agent installed. (This has already been pushed out to most computers in the district) C. Those users that were logging into Novell will now logon to their workstation which will log them on to the new Microsoft Network Operating System. D. Any shared files will also be moved. (S:) E. Internet Explorer home page will be set to www.graniteschools.org. (Can be changed) F. Set screen saver to blank. (To conserve energy) G. Redirect My Documents to the home directory. (M:) H. You can access you home directory outside the district by navigating to https://portal.graniteschools.org .

Q: How will I know what my username and password when I am migrated?

Response: Every user already has a username and password to the Microsoft Network Operating system. It is their current email username and password which is called an ‘Active Directory’ user account. The username is the portion of the email account prior to ‘@graniteschools.org’ Migration Acceptance Document

The attached information sheet and this acceptance document is a tool to be used by the user or some other means to validate a workstation migration.
