_____Read at Least 5 Books with Your Child

November 22, 2016

Dear Parents,

Next week we will be comparing and contrasting different versions of The Gingerbread Boy. We will discuss characters, settings, main ideas, and main events. We will also review rhyming words, parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives), counting on, how to write scientifically, identifying numbers to 20, and adding to 10.

____We have been working on recognizing teen numbers and then finding the tens and extra ones in each teen number. An example of this would be: 10 and 4 makes 14. I remind my students of the “magic” word they can write above a 2-digit number to help them to remember which number is in the tens place and which number is in the ones place. The word they write above the number is “to.” The “t” reminds them of tens and the “o” reminds them of ones. As you review teen numbers with your child, ask “How many ones are in this number? How many tens are in this number?” Use these numbers to review. Point to the number and ask your child which number it is and how many tens and ones are in it.
