Residency Level: PGY 1 Surgical Rotation: Anesthesia Length of Rotation: Four Weeks

Goals and Objectives

Patient care:  Pre-operative Assessment, Intra-operative Management, and Post-anesthetic Care  Principles of airway management

Technical skill:  Airway management by mask and endotracheal intubation  Venous access (peripheral and central lines)  Arterial puncture/ lines  Lumbar puncture and epidurals

Medical knowledge:  Principles of local, regional and general anesthesia, including physiology and pharmacology of anesthetic and analgesic agents

Practice-based learning and improvement:  Critique personal practice outcomes  Demonstrate recognition of need to stay abreast of new knowledge and practice-based learning

Interpersonal and communication skills:  Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and recognize the importance of such communication between the anesthesiologist, the surgeon and other members of the surgical team

Professionalism:  Demonstrate proper documentation of the anesthetic record  Demonstrate sensitivity to age, gender and culture of patients and other health care professionals

Systems-based practice:  Learn to practice high quality, cost effective patient care and demonstrate a knowledge of risk-benefit analysis
