COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides the student with knowledge and clinical experience in advanced health assessment of diverse clients across the life span within the context of the advanced practice role. Emphasis is on acquisition and analysis of relevant data for the development of a comprehensive and holistic assessment. A major focus is on the symptom/health problem assessment and selection and interpretation of screening and diagnostic tests in order to formulate a differential diagnosis.

COURSE OBJECTIVES Within the context of the advanced practice role, upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate proficiency in performing comprehensive health assessments including risk assessment.

2. Demonstrate proficiency in performing focused health assessments.

3. Perform a risk assessment of the client which takes into consideration life circumstance and cultural, ethnic, and developmental variations.

4. Organize and present holistic health assessment data.

5. Differentiate normal physiological alterations from pathological findings.

6. Demonstrate proficiency in performing symptom/health problem assessments based on selected chief complaints.

7. Utilize the diagnostic reasoning process in the selection and interpretation of appropriate screening and diagnostic tests.

ATTENDANCE Students are expected to be present for all classes, other learning experiences and examinations. Students who have extraordinary circumstances (e.g., death in the family, illness) preventing attendance should explain these circumstances to the course instructor prior to the scheduled class or clinical lab, or as soon as possible thereafter. Instructors will make an effort to accommodate reasonable requests. Work responsibilities are not an acceptable excuse for missed lab experiences. A grade penalty may be assigned for late assignments or make-up exams. Make-up exams may not be available in all courses. There may be an opportunity to observe ARNPs in the clinical setting (Archer Clinic, Gainesville). Students will be notified and a sign-up sheet posted should the prospect arise.

TOPICAL OUTLINE 1. Characteristics of holistic assessment based on systems theory including physiological, affective and cognitive systems for client and client’s environment

2. Organization of comprehensive and focused health assessment data

3. Verbal and written communication of comprehensive and focused health assessment data

4. Advanced health assessment

5. Risk assessment taking into consideration life circumstance and cultural, ethnic, developmental, and family variations

6. Illness assessment based on common chief complaints

7. Screening tests for physical and mental health

8. Diagnostic tests for common acute and chronic illnesses

TEACHING METHODS Online lectures, clinical skill demonstration, simulation exercises, audiovisual materials, and case studies. This course will utilize a simulation lab for practice of assessment skills, not actual clinical settings with patients.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES Skills practice, role playing, system based virtual patient assessment of an online avatar prior to relevant labs, soap notes, paper, Harrell Center visit for male/female exam

EVALUATION METHODS COURSE GRADE CALCULATION Minimum Required Contact Hours for Laboratory: 45. Students are required to participate in demonstration of the male and female exam through the Harrell Professional Development and Assessment Center.

EVALUATION METHODS COURSE GRADE CALCULATION For students who achieve a satisfactory laboratory grade, the letter grade for the course will be based upon the following: 1. Satisfactory written assignments including SOAP notes, completion of virtual patient assessments and objective evaluations, online and in lab. 2. Participation in all scheduled labs (including Harrell Center). 3. Proficiency in examination of each body system. This will be evaluated by a 20 minute full PE. The student must demonstrate proficiency (84% or above) in the 20 minute check off and the Problem Focused Assessment in order to pass the course. If either of these is failed, a course grade of E will be assigned regardless of scores achieved on other assignments.

*All assigned readings, quizzes and other learning activities are to be completed before lab is held in order to assure a productive session. Labs will have an AM session 8:00-12:00 for one content area, a break for lunch, and then a PM session 1:00-5:00 for the second content area. Soap notes are turned in at the end of each laboratory session, and will be returned at the next lab day.
