CURRICULUM Harbor General Medicine Consult Service

A. ROTATION PURPOSE: The purpose of this rotation is to learn how to do a pre- operative evaluation in patients requiring non-cardiac surgeries. The resident will learn how to make recommendations concerning the evaluation, management, and risk of cardiac problems over the entire peripoperative period. In addition to the pre- operative evaluation, the resident will see patients with general medical conditions and learn how to communicate their management recommendations to the primary team.

B. The CLINICAL EXPERIENCE may include patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery having: 1. Anemia 2. Liver Disease 3. Chest pain 4. Arrhythmias 5. pulmonary diseases such sleep apnea, COPD, and interstitial lung disease 6. poor functional capacity 7. a history of chronic steroid use

C. CLINICAL SKILLS to be developed on this rotation include: 1. focused history and physical examination directed at the pre-operative evaluation 2. how to care for a patient post-operatively 3. when to appropriately order a cardiac stress test

D. Things to Do As the GMC Resident at Harbor-UCLA 1. Refer to St. Mary Survival Guide for Starting at Harbor-UCLA page 36. 2. Meet on 5 East near the consult box and page the Kennamer fellow: 310-501-5528, 3. The Resident must make a calendar of his or her schedule that includes days of ICU call, continuity clinic days, days off and hand it to the Fellow. 4. Consults are done in the morning and rounding is done after noon conference. 5. Attend Conferences. For locations of Conferences and clinics below please ask Fellow. 6.
