PHIL 1213 ETHICS Examines the types of situations that pose ethical problems in the workplace. Emphasis is on integrity, personal morality, honesty and social responsibility. Case studies and comparison/contrast of legal/ethical issues are also discussed. Theory. Available online.

Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to become aware of ethical situations and related business law in the workplace.

AUTHORIZED TOOLS All quizzes and written out of class assignments are to be completed independently; no collaboration with classmates is permitted and any instance of such will be considered academic dishonesty.

Student Orangemail (Google email) is used extensively for communications between the university, faculty, and students. Please check daily. Recommended to add Gmail app to smartphones.

Our online learning management system is Brightspace Desire to Learn (D2L) and is used exclusively for online courses.

LATE WORK Late work is not accepted. The course schedule is attached. Assignment submissions to D2L Discussions and Dropbox must be made by class time on the due date to be accepted and graded.

Complete out of class work with plenty of time to submit. Computer/electrical/Internet problems can happen, but no extensions of time will be granted.

SPECIFIC COURSE ACTIVITIES Please refer to the Course Schedule at the end of this syllabi for specific assignments and due dates. You can work about a week ahead.

The first week’s assignments are a reading and written response to motivation for taking online classes instead of face to face; and syllabus quiz. The link to the reading is located on D2L Course Home and the quiz is on D2L Quizzes.

The writings and chapter cases are to be prepared in Word 2013 or 2016, saved and uploaded to the appropriate D2L Dropbox folder.

Beginning with Chapter 1, please read the assigned chapter, review the presentation, post on discussions, read and answer the questions to the assigned end of chapter cases, and complete the open book quiz.

 the discussion responses and comments to two other students’ comments are to be completed in D2L Discussions.  the cases assigned are to be read and the questions answered in a Word file, save and uploaded to D2L Dropbox folder for that case  take the 10 question multiple choice/true quiz under D2L Quizzes within 30 minutes after each chapter.

Each has 10 questions (multiple choice or true/false) and 30 minutes to complete. Each question is worth four points for a total of 40 points. Open book is fine, but collaborating with others is not tolerated.

Missed quizzes cannot be made up for any reason, so please keep track of dates and don’t want until the last minute.

OTHER LAB AND CLASSROOM POLICIES CLASSROOM CONDUCT The subject of ethics in business and society invites discussion. Our class Discussions will be a comfortable venue for expressing ideas and informed opinions. We won’t always agree with each other, but we can demonstrate and expect respect and tolerance. Today’s workplace values diversity; civil discourse is required here and there as well

WHAT: This assignment is designed to increase your awareness of the ethical aspects of professional practice. Serves as the assessment assignment for Ethics.

WHEN: DUE by class time posted to D2L Dropbox. NOT ACCEPTED LATE.

WHO: Select a professional from your area of specialization, ideally with several years of experience. Your program faculty may be able to direct you to such a person or member of their advisory committee. Retirees, OSU faculty, staff, and students cannot be interviewed for this assignment.

If you are unsure of your future career, you may use someone you identify as a professional in one of the field you are considering. That person can be an acquaintance, friend, family member, or teacher from previous school as long as they’re active in the workforce.

WHAT: Using the attached questionnaire, interview the individual concerning his/her professional practices and ethical behavior. Record responses on the questionnaire; you must address each question and explain the answer. Be sure to remain objective. You are only the reporter.

After the interview, download the questionnaire and type in the responses. You will be graded on spelling, coherency, explanation and use of abbreviations, completeness, and all aspects of college writing.

You must provide a professional or workplace code of ethics. If the interviewee can’t provide one, you must Google to locate a related one you feel is the most relevant to their field. Explain why you chose it and how it applies. You may ask an instructor in your area of expertise for guidance or ask me before it’s due.

HOW:  Format in Word 2013 or 2016  12 point font (Tahoma, Ariel, Calibri)  double space body  include questions  bullet or bold answers.

College level grammar and composition is expected. FOLLOW THE FORMAT EXAMPLE . Please utilize the free tutoring service available in the Lasso Center to help you in editing and finalizing your interview.

Acronyms and abbreviations are commonly used and are specific to industry. Any acronym/abbreviation must be spelled out the first time used, then give the short form.

(Obtain copy related to interviewee’s industry or profession)  Not that I know of  I can see where a written code might be useful for employees that don’t fit the definition of professional.
