LICKING COUNTY OHC JUNE NEWSLETTER Hello Everyone! June 1, 2017

Wow! How much more rain can we get? Such a soggy start to the riding season. Things have been moving right along with events and plans for future events. The chapter held its second Safety on Horseback event at our May meeting on May 22nd. Once again, I would like to thank Regina & John Shoopman along with Darian Harness for coming out to speak to our chapter. Regina and John are both Mounted Police Officers, Regina with OSU and John with Columbus Police. This event was “hands on” using the techniques that was discussed by Regina at last year’s event. We had six riders that participated and all did great! We also had a good turnout of observers. After our potluck dinner, we got started with a very beautiful evening. Thankfully, Mother Nature cooperated for a change. I would also like to include a little write up that Tami McAdams posted on Facebook describing each of the maneuver’s that Regina discussed and demonstrated. Tami did a great job describing each and I think they will helpful to know, to those who could not make the meeting. I will post this info later in the Newsletter. I have also added photos of the training on the Licking County Webpage. Check them out at lickingcountyohc.org. I am going to try to get another event set-up for obstacle training, I will keep you posted!

We had only one member who applied for sponsorship for the Youth Campout this year, so as was agreed upon by the chapter to support five sponsorships, the remaining funds for four sponsorships were forwarded to Jackie Romaker, State Youth Chair, to distribute to four other youths needing funds. She had four that were looking for sponsorship and was ecstatic to receive our donation. I hope the kids have fun. I’m sure we will get some feedback and I will pass it along.

Well, I will keep this short! Just a reminder that the chapter meets the last Monday of the month at the Bradley Building, located at the Infirmary Mound Park of the Licking Park District on St Rt 37, just south of Granville. The meeting starts at 7pm! I would love to see some new faces along with all of our dedicated members who attend each month. Come on out and meet some of your fellow chapter members!

Until next time, ride safe!

Charlene Santee LCOHC President SAFETY ON HORSEBACK! May 22, 2017 Mounted Defense training. Here is a re-cap, by Tami McAdams, of some of the techniques that were demonstrated. Thanks Tami for putting them into words! Attacker grabs your rein(s)... Drive horse's head and chest into attacker Attacker grabs your body, to pull you off... Turn horse away from attacker, swing hindquarters towards attacker Attacker grabs your leg/foot, to shove you off horse.... Don't lock leg, let leg bend/flex. Turn horse into attacker. If: Attack comes from in front of your leg, drive horse into them If: Attack comes from behind your leg, turn away, move hindquarters into attacker Weapons... Use what you have.... *Lead rope, hit and swing at attacker *Water bottle, thrown at attackers head/face...... Leave during the distraction you've created. Desensitizing: Using stick-type feather duster... Have helper gently move duster near horse's head to get used to things by head Lead rope.... Swing at attacker ...practice at home, swinging rope around horse and by horses head, to get them used to it Mace/pepper spray.... Use silly string to get horse used to sight and sound of the sprayed liquid stream ...a) move horse gradually closer and stopping while sprays ...b) pass horse by someone spraying, use shoulder-in technique as passing by spray. ...c) rider carries the silly string and squirts to side of horses body and head ... Remember ...rider does NOT look at scary thing. Sit back, sit deep, look up and forward, look where you want to go, NOT at scary thing Obstacles... Using shoulder in, to go past (instead of turning whole horse to face scary obstacle. Shoulder in keeps your rear end from "blowing out" into traffic. Slightly turn head away from obstacle Passing a scary thing/ obstacle, that is on your right: Left rein, left leg on to bend around it, right leg holds hindquarters from turning into obstacle

Trail Rides Cinda Wilson, Chair

I’m glad to announce that the Licking OHC was able to have three rides so far this year (Mohican, Salt Fork and Blue Rock). Mother Nature has been busy supplying the farmers with plenty of rain for their hay and crops, but for trail riders it has not been good riding weather. We did have to move the Mohican Ride from April 29th to May 6th. We had a good ride and the trails were pretty good for all the rain we have had. Mohican trails are good for drainage and doesn’t hold in the moisture like other trails.

The Taft ride on May13th was cancelled due to the park having trails closed. This gave those celebrating Mother’s Day on 14th more time to prepare or visit with family. You know Mother Nature falls into this category.

Our next ride was on 20th of May at Salt Fork. Some of the Licking OHC went in Thursday (preparing for maybe a full camp over the weekend). The Washington OHC was having their annual fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network Ride on Saturday. The camp did have plenty of riders but spaces were still available.

Walmart provided the dinner that evening asking only for a donation. This Walmart is located in Marietta (Don Wagner, OHC Trail Maintenance chair, son is the manager of this store) was the sponsor of the event.

Walmart had a very nice spread (hamburger, hot dogs, and different kinds of cold salads, bake beans, cookies, and drinks. The center pieces for the tables were all kinds of candies! I love those eatable centerpieces! After the dinner the Washington OHC had an Auction.

Walmart again donated several big items to be sold. Members donated and gathered more items to be auctioned off! Walmart also donated items for prizes for those who rode in the Children’s Miracle Network Ride that day. They had a 50/50 everyone could purchase and raffle tickets on a nice bike.

The weather wasn’t the greatest but we were able to ride Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Sunday 100% chance of rain so we decided to load up and come home. Our group logged in 38 miles for the weekend. It was a very nice weekend!

On a personal note, Mike and I camped beside two rigs from West Virginia. These people were very nice and interesting to talk to. We joined in their campfire on Saturday evening after the auction was over. Interesting campfire stories were told around the fire by the different counties individuals.

Our next ride was at Blue Rock on May 26th thru 29th (Memorial Day Weekend). Again the weather was not promoting trail rides. Some of the Licking OHC went in on Friday and was able to ride before the rain hit Saturday early morning making the trails very wet and slippery on Saturday. Those riding on Friday had reported that the trails were wet and already some slippery. The Licking OHC member that went decided to stay in camp on Saturday and forgo riding. Other chapters did go out and some mishaps happened on the trails. No one was seriously hurt I was told but again riding on very slippery trails can result in injuries to you or your horse. Please use caution in making decisions on going out in those trail conditions.

Our county members decided to pack up on Sunday morning and come home. Why keep the horses tied on a line when they could be running free in their pasture? The tie lines were nothing up mud by that time.

It was a good weekend though but not for riding. Our members enjoyed the hog roast, silent auction, and visiting with other county OHC members. It is good to see our friends from the different OHC counties. Muskingum OHC did a lot of work putting on this fundraiser so I was glad it was well attended. Some people came in just for the hog roast and silent auction they were probably the smart ones leaving the horses home in dry conditions. I will have to say that I enjoyed relaxing under our awning visiting with OHC members on Saturday!
