Algebra 2: Parent Function Picture

Objective: You will take a picture of an object that resembles a parent function (non-linear) that we have learned this year (i.e. quadratic, cubic, exponential, etc.). You will upload the picture to the geogebra app on chrome and create the function that fits your imagine using the geogebra tools.

Preparing your image:

1. Upload photo to your computer. 2. Open Geogebra app: http://web.geogebra.org/chromeapp/ 3. Right click in the graphics box and click the box next to grid. 4. Go to “Edit”, “Insert Image from” and choose “File. a. Browse your computer for the correct image. b. Center your image to your coordinate plane. c. Once you have your image placed, right click on it and choose “Object Properties”. d. Place a check in the box for “Background Image”. You should now be able to see the grid on your image. e. You are now ready to start determining your function.

Writing your function:

1. In the “Input” line at the bottom of the screen, start typing your function. Remember to use your transformation rules to guide the direction/size of your function (i.e. negative for reflection). a. For using exponents, use the ^ symbol. Example, -2.4x^3. 2. In the algebra box, click “Object Properties” on your function. 3. Make sure you are in the “Basic” tab. Place a check in the box for “Show Label”. From the drop down menu, choose “Value”. 4. In the “Color” tab, choose a color that is visible on your image. 5. Move your function as needed to fit as perfectly as possible by clicking on the curve and dragging it. 6. Play around with coefficients and constants to get an even better fit.

Ready to submit:

1. Go to “File” and choose “Save As”. 2. In the filename line, type your name (first and last). 3. Click “Download as .ggb file” 4. As a backup, use your snipping tool to take a snapshot of your image with function and equation and save using your first and last name. 5. Upload both files to the “Parent Function Picture Dropbox” on School Space under Lessons.
