UCGE Meeting

Present: Mary Dupree, Gary Williams, Linda Morris, Sandra Haarsager, Wes Chun, Charles Tibbals, Patrick Wilson, Steve Drown, Mark DeSantis, Lauren Fins

Meeting called to order at 3:30pm.

I. Old Business: A. Enrollment 1. Fall enrollment - added three new sections 2. New Core Discovery Courses for Fall a. Art, Artists, & Madness b. Shared Places: An Introduction to Tribal Cultures & Histories 3. New Core Science Course for Fall a. Natural hazards and Disaster Preparedness 4. Problems: a. Determining the number of sections needed each fall b. Problems with wait lists c. Number of students enrolled in more than one Core course 3. Resolutions a. Target 49 sections of Core Discovery on an annual basis b. 9 sections of Core Science on an annual basis c. Possibly eliminating wait lists

B. Core Discovery Sustainability 1. $250,000 one time payment to Core for instruction for 2006-2007 academic year 2. Shift responsibility to Colleges and Departments to contribute to Core with faculty to instruct 3. Support and encouragement from the Provost 4. Faculty development a. Jean Henscheid and Wes Chun to develop a plan for faculty development b. Use of E-Porfolios

C. Core Clusters 1. Spring 2006 a. UCGE voted to remove clusters forwarded revised UI Catalog section J3-d (Listed all 400+ courses that were approved in the clusters. b. Returned by UCC with instructions to develop a better substitute for core electives. 2. Summer 2006 a. Failed first attempt to revise core electives. b. Committee members attending felt that a task force was needed to develop a new core. 3. Fall 2006 a. UCC recognized that current core took 6-8 years to develop yet expressed disappointment that UCGE was not able to show progress in resolving core cluster. b. Requested resolution or at least pathway to enlightenment.

II. New Business A. Discussion on clusters 1. Option (1) Keep the clusters – not a good idea; too many advising problems 2. Option (2) Update clusters to reflect current course availability a. Discussed narrowing down clusters to 10 and reduce down the number of classes in each cluster b. Setup sub-committee to start working to narrow down clusters to 10 i. Sub-committee members: Gary Williams, Sandra Haarsager, Jean Henscheid, Mary Dupree and Charles Tibbals c. Committee to select courses that align with the UI Strategic Plans for Teaching and Learning d. Course selection definitely trans-interdisciplinary 3. Option 3 - Develop a new core curriculum; was removed. 4. Option 4 – Discussed the possibility of teaching Core Discovery in modules, easier for departments to provide faculty for a shorter period of time, but harder for students to develop long term relationship with instructor. B. New chair 1. Wes Chun announced that UCC had appointed Gary Williams to be the new chair of UCGE. (Gary’s appointment was subsequently confirmed by Faculty Council, and he will assume the helm at the next meeting.)
