FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ROCKY MOUNT, NC—Dr. Kathy L. Lawson has been named as the Student Success Outreach Specialist focused on student success and retention with the Upper Coastal Plains Learning Council and NC State University beginning March 1, 2010. Her office is located at the Gateway Technology Center in Rocky Mount.

This position will provide educational and professional development support for teachers, principals, and administrators within the five counties (Northhampton, Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, and Wilson) of Eastern North Carolina to increase student success and retention. The position will focus on preparing educators to understand and support educational aspirations of prospective higher education students in the region, link programs of student retention and success, and lead joint efforts in the region.

Dr. Lawson’s previous position was with Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools as administrator of an alternative middle school and she has also been employed the HOPE Program as a teacher/counselor.

After receiving her Ed.S and Ed.D degrees from East Carolina University in educational leadership, Dr. Lawson has been employed by the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools in various administrator positions.

“It has been an incredible blessing for me to work in many areas of education in this state in my professional career and I am very excited about the wonderful aspects and opportunities of the Student Success Outreach Specialist position” Lawson said.
