FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM 2017+2018

READING: READING STREET (SCOTT FORESMAN) 1. Animals Tame And Wild (with workbook) 2. Communities (with workbook) 3. Changes (with workbook) 4. Treasures (with workbook) 5. Great Ideas (with workbook) These five children’s readers are at the core for high interest, authentic literature. They provide opportunities for cross textual reading in the content areas. Higher thinking skills and writing tasks will be practiced which will prepare students for in-class evaluations as well as meeting state standards and taking standardized tests.

SPELLING: WORKBOOK (SCOTT FORESMAN) There will be: 1. daily spelling practice 2. weekly tests 3. take home word lists 4. strategies for spelling 5. teaching of concepts related to spelling words

PHONICS: WORKBOOK (SCOTT FORESMAN) Concepts covered will be: 1. short and long vowel sounds with rules and patterns 2. blends and digraphs (beginning and ending) 3. inflected endings (er, est) 4. compound words 5. ‘r’ controlled vowels 6. prefixes and suffixes

ENGLISH: WORKBOOK (SCOTT FORESMAN) This subject will include: 1. sentence structure 2. kinds of sentences (statements, questions, commands, exclamations) 3. punctuation 4. parts of speech 5. verb tenses 6. singular and plural 7. ‘to be’ verbs 8. contractions 9. homonyms, synonyms, multiple meaning words WRITERS’ WORSHOP: LUCY CALKINS There are 4 units of study: 1.Small Moments: Writing With Focus, Detail, and Dialogue (Students take the everyday events of their lives and make them into focused, well-structured stories. They then learn to breathe life into the characters by making them talk, think, and interact. This is NARRATIVE WRITING). 2.Nonfiction Chapter Books (Students enter the world of INFORAMTIONAL WRITING as they combine pictures and charts with domain-specific vocabulary and craft moves to create engaging teaching texts). 3.Writing Review (Students create PERSUASIVE reviews of all sorts-pizza restaurant reviews, TV show reviews, and finally book reviews that hook the reader. They will clearly express their OPINION and bolster their argument in convincing ways. 4.From Scenes to Series: Writing Fiction (Students learn to “show and tell” and use action, dialogue, and feelings to create books modeled after the “Henry And Mudge” book series).

MATH: ENVISION MATH (SCOTT FORESMAN) Using workbooks, manipulatives and technology, this series covers the following topics: 1. basic algebraic reasoning and geometry 2. measurement 3. statistics 4. data analysis 5. probability There will be addition and subtraction to 20, 2 digit addition and subtraction, comparison of numbers, graphing, counting money and time with a strong emphasis on problem solving and parent involvement.

SOCIAL STUDIES: TEXT AND INTERACTIVE WORKBOOK (TEACHERS’ CURRICULUM INSTITUTE) Subtitled “My School And Family” this series covers the 2 areas most relevant to first graders. There are 4 core disciplines that will be addressed in each chapter: 1. civics 2. economics 3. geography 4. history

SCIENCE: TEXTBOOK, INTERACTIVE WORKBOOK, STUDY GUIDE (HOUGHTON MIFFLIN) Standards to be covered are: 1. needs and environments of plants and animals (life science) 2. weather tools and patterns; seasons (earth science) 3. properties of solids, liquids, gases (physical science) 4. effects of heating, cooling and mixing substances (physical science) HANDWRITING: WORKBOOK PUBLISHING) First grade stresses: 1.proper formations of letters 2.proper spacing between words 3.correct ‘holding’ of writing tools 4.neatness

MISCELLANEOUS: Children will be assigned: 1. one to two curriculum related ‘at home’ projects 2. monthly book reports (beginning in January or February) related to a specific genre
