FOUNDATION COURSE IN CBT (Trinity College Dublin and St Patrick’s University Hospital)

Background The Foundation Course in CBT current format has run since October 2008. It offers a broad and comprehensive introduction to CBT in affiliation with Trinity College Dublin (TCD). The course is mainly aimed at mental health professionals or equivalent, with an interest in CBT. The course will:

1) function as the first year of a proposed four year cognitive behavioural psychotherapy MSc programme at TCD, for those meeting criteria for progression 2) offer a comprehensive introduction to CBT principles for clinicians who want to understand and use CBT principles in their day to day clinical roles, without becoming accredited cognitive behavioural psychotherapists 3) offer a comprehensive grounding in CBT principles for clinicians with an interest in pursuing a CBT clinical qualification and accreditation in the future

Who can apply? Any mental health workers or equivalent with an interest in CBT but lack formal training or experience can apply. The course will be ideal for psychiatrists, psychiatric registrars, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, counsellors, voluntary sector carers and those with training and experience in the human sciences.

The curriculum The curriculum will be broad and will provide strong foundations for development as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist and prepare the trainee for a more in-depth CBT clinically focused training. There will be three major themes on the course separated into 3 terms, comprising a) background theories of human development and cognitive and behavioural therapy, b) CBT models of mental health problems and c) building a therapeutic relationship using CBT principles. Teaching will be delivered in the form of didactic lectures, self-reflection tutorials, videos and role plays.

Duration of course The course will consist of 3 terms. It is expected to run from October to May and will comprise of three separate blocks in October, January and March. Each block will start with 3 introductory days, followed by 15 (in total) fortnightly teaching days on Thursdays.

Venue The course will be run in the Medical Teaching Centre at St Patrick’s University Hospital.

Course cost The course will cost €3,200 for the year. Please make cheques payable to ‘TCD No. 1 Account’ by 14th June 2011.
