VAUGHN, KOREAN WAR PRISONER OF WAR, 13 AND TO DECLARE APRIL 12, 2016 AS “PFC. AUBREY D. 14 VAUGHN DAY” IN SOUTH CAROLINA. 15 16 Whereas, Pfc. Aubrey D. Vaughn died while a prisoner of war in 17 North Korea in 1951. Mr. Vaughn heroically served this country in 18 the Korean War. He was reported missing in action when his 19 company was overrun by the Chinese Communist Forces near 20 Undamjang, North Korea on April 23, 1951; and 21 22 Whereas, it was reported that Mr. Vaughn died while in captivity 23 at a prisoner of war camp; and 24 25 Whereas, in 1954, the remains of Korean War service members 26 were returned to the United States in an operation called 27 “Operation Glory”. The remains were unable to be identified at the 28 time and were interred as unknowns at the National Memorial 29 Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii; and 30 31 Whereas, in 2015, due to advancements in technology, the remains 32 were exhumed for analysis, and in conjunction with the 33 circumstantial evidence available, the remains were determined to 34 be those of Pfc. Vaughn; and 35 36 Whereas, Mr. Vaughn will be laid to rest on April 12, 2016, what 37 would have been his eighty-fifth birthday, in Union, South 38 Carolina; and 39 40 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are eternally 41 grateful for the sacrifice made by Pfc. Vaughn and those like him, 42 and wish to never forget his life and legacy. Now, therefore,

[1200] 2 1 2 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 3 concurring: 4 5 That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, 6 honor and recognize the life of Army Pfc. Aubrey D. Vaughn, 7 Korean War prisoner of war, and declare April 12, 2016 as “Pfc. 8 Aubrey D. Vaughn Day” in South Carolina. 9 10 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 11 the family of Pfc. Aubrey D. Vaughn 12 XX 13
