Standards Addressed:

5.4 The student will find the sum, difference, and product of two numbers expressed as decimals through thousandths, using an appropriate method of calculation, including paper and pencil, estimation, mental computation, and calculators.

Pre-Assessment:  Given last Friday on CPS – covered adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals

Defining the Learning Goals: What the student will:

Know (Facts/Vocabulary):  How to correctly write vertical multiplication, addition, and subtraction problems  Larger multiplication, addition, and subtraction problems must be written vertically in order to solve them accurately  Multiplication facts through 9s  Steps involved in multiplying 3 digit times 1 or 2 digit numbers  Whole number and decimal place value and the importance of “lining up” place values correctly when adding or subtracting o Add zeroes when necessary to save spots in adding/subtracting decimals  Steps involved in properly placing the decimal in the product, by counting the decimal places in the multiplicands and “scooting over” the correct amount  Vocabulary: regroup, product

Understand (Big Ideas):  Multiplication is another way to add.  Multiplication is a computation method that can be used to solve everyday problems.  Decimals are a huge part of our lives, especially when they are representing money. It’s important to understand decimals as they relate to dollars and cents because it can help us to make decisions about what we can buy and what we m ay need to pass up to stay within a budget.

Do (Specific Skills student is able to do after the lesson):  Create and solve 3 digit times 1 or 2 digit multiplication problems with decimals.  Create and solve addition and subtraction problems with decimals.

Materials/Supplies:  Menus o I downloaded menus from the internet, I typed in A&G Pizza, and Western Sizzlin’ in google, and use what came up. You could use any menus for this lesson, but you might have to change the worksheets to reflect the food that is on the menu that you have chosen. Feel free to change them and use them however it suits your classroom needs.  Worksheets  Paper/pencil

Procedures/Activities

Day 1: Whole group instruction for multiplying decimals. (We have already covered adding and subtracting decimals, so I may mention that, but I will not dwell on it since everyone is able to complete those skills at this time.) I will definitely mention the way that the decimal is placed in the product based on the number of decimal spaces that are used in the multiplicands. (On the pre-assessment 0% of students moved the decimals correctly.) We will practice some problems together on the board after taking notes and I will model what students will be doing the following day on their DI lessons, using an online menu and the smartboard.

Day 2: Differentiated decimal lesson. Students will use menus that I have downloaded from the internet to complete some multiplication (predominately) and a few addition and subtraction problems involving decimals. Students will be given a menu and a worksheet to go along with it, based on their readiness of this skill and on their understanding and familiarity with multiplication facts. Students will use the menu to calculate the bill for the food items ordered in each of 10 scenarios. Low Readiness  A & G Pizza Medium Readiness  Western Sizzlin * High Readiness  * Western Sizzlin *

Day 3: Students will work in small groups today to complete decimal problems using a different menu (I used a menu that I downloaded from the internet from a restaurant called “The Hungry Hobo,” but any menu will do.) Each student will be using the same menu today, but he or she will be making their own choices to complete the problems. At the end of the lesson, we will come back together as a whole group and discuss the importance of using decimals correctly and discuss the merits of the lessons that we used this week.

Anchor Activities:  Math centers  Computer centers

Post-Assessment:  iTest (quiz) to be given on Friday, including adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals

Closure:  exit cards o 1. Did you enjoy the lessons this week? o 2. Do you think the lessons helped you learn more about decimals? o 3. What could we do to make these lessons even better?
