Weona Park Pool Update

On November 5, 2013 Borough Council made the difficult decision to close the pool for the 2014 summer season. The following factors led to this decision:

 The loss of over 900,000 gallons of water in 2013  The age and condition of circulation system and filter tanks  The risk and dangers associated with the use of gas chlorination  The cost of compliance with new pool regulations  Operating loss of over $140,000 since 2008  Declining pool attendance

Prior to making this decision, corrective measures were taken in an attempt to address the issues facing the pool:

 Continuous patching and repairs, both in-house and by subcontracted professionals, at the cost of nearly $10,000/year  Concrete overlay in wading pool  Replaced slate storm sewer with HDPE pipe  Installed 280-foot sanitary sewer line from backwash tank and pool drain to sanitary sewer  Installed chemical controller  Produced 2006 pool feasibility study, submitted by Wallover Architects, outlining the need to reconstruct the pool.  In 2010, replaced 1966 pumps  Replaced three skimmer baskets and line  Drew from ground water to make up water in pool  Air tested pool lines and viewed with camera  At the June 3, 2014 Council meeting the Council voted to have testing preformed to assess the integrity of the ground underneath and around the pool

The many problems facing the pool are serious, as the 2006 feasibility study indicates the pool needs a total reconstruction. This is extremely costly, with 2006 estimates ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 million dollars.
