Organization of Instruction :

The Support for Interventions class follows the North Carolina Common Core Standards and corresponds to the students IEP goals. The overall goal of this class is to provide researched based instruction/strategies that support the students IEP goals. Support for Interventions class should NOT be regarded as a “study hall” or “free period”.

Students will receive instruction in researched based strategies to increase their understanding and completion of assignments/activities in the general education classroom. Additionally, students will be taught learning strategies and how to apply them when studying general education content material. These strategies include: goal setting, organizational skills, time management, study skills, note- taking, test-taking, writing/editing skills, vocabulary, math skills and reading comprehension strategies.

Class Instruction:

Support for Interventions class will consist of two 45 minutes periods. During the first 45 minutes of class the students will receive instruction in math or reading based on IEP goals. The second 45 minutes will give the students the opportunity to apply strategies to complete any class assignments and/or assignments given in this class.

Goals:  To achieve success in all content areas classes  To develop and reinforce study and organizational skills  To promote student responsibility and personal life skills  To strengthen awareness of current events, contemporary issues, and cultural literacy through reading and writing skills Required Materials

Pens/pencils Agenda: Students are expected to write all homework assignments in their agenda (provided if needed) and use it for future planning. Instruction will be provided. Agendas will be checked every day for a grade.

Grading Policy:

50% Work Completion. Students will receive a grade based on what they complete in class. Class work and skill practice may be given as individual work, station/center work, and/or group work.

50% Participation (includes “time on task” behavior, warm-ups, and journals):  Students must be actively involved in class to earn full points each day. Included in daily participation grades: being on time and prepared; being present, alert & engaged; answering & asking questions; taking notes; using time given in class to apply study skills &/or IEP goals; If at any time a student does not have work (or tell me they have no homework), I will assign additional assignments that focus on math, reading, and or writing skills related to the student’s IEP goals and or relevant common core goals. These additional assignments will be graded and reflected in the participation grade.

Powerschool

Parents and students are both encouraged to access PowerSchool to keep track of grades and assignments. Contact the main office for more information on how to create an account.

Catch Up Cafe

When a student has an incomplete assignment and/or missing work in a class, they will be assigned to attend Catch-Up Café during their lunch period to complete the assignment so that they will not receive a zero. For more information, refer to the student handbook.

Availability of Extra Help Each day in Support for Interventions class, students have study time in which to work on homework from other classes. During this time, students may get help with questions they have about homework, projects, and studying. Many teachers offer after school help on a regular basis, scheduling a day each week in which students may come for extra help. Check each teacher’s web page or syllabus for their availability. If a student cannot come for a regular tutoring session, ask the teacher if they are available at another time to help. Take advantage of the help!

Final Grade:

1st 6 weeks = 25% 2nd 6 weeks = 25% 3rd 6 weeks = 25% Final exam = 25% *Final Exams will take place January 20 – 23.

CLASS RULES:

1 – Be in your seat before the bell rings.

2 – Follow teacher directions the first time they are given.

3 - Cell phones and/or MP3/music players are only to be used during directed technology activities.

1:1 Initiative

All freshmen students will receive a laptop for the school year. There is a $25 insurance fee. Laptops will be used daily. We will go over the technology etiquette in class. There will be paperwork that needs parent signatures.

Edmodo

We will be using Edmodo as an online resource of class information alongside the DHS school website. Students will have assignments and resources which will be used on a regular basis

CONSEQUENCES: 1st Offense – verbal warning. 2nd Offense – lunch detention, parent contact. 3rd Offense – lunch detention, parent contact. 4th Offense – office referral

Attendance: Attendance policies can be accessed from the Onslow County School website. Remember that learning is cumulative. School absences should be limited to increase academic success. You will be responsible for obtaining and completing all missing assignments for your general education classes.
