The standard agreed approach to passwords in the laboratory routers is:

To configure the passwords one must be connected to the router via the console port using a PC and console cable. You also need to enter privileged mode.

Step 1 Log in to the router in user EXEC mode. Mode user EXEC is the default mode.

Step 2 Log in to the router in privileged EXEC mode Enter enable at the user mode prompt

Router>enable

Step 3 Enter global configuration mode Enter configure terminal at the privileged mode prompt.

Router#configure terminal

Step 4 Configuring the console password

Router(config)#line console 0 Router(config-line)#password cisco Router(config-line)#login Router(config-line)#exit Router(config)#

Step 5 Configuring the enable password Router(config)#enable password class Router(config)#exit

Step 6 Return to user EXEC mode Router#disable

Show the router’s running configuration

Enter privileged EXEC mode Router>enable Router#show running-config You should be able to see the password in the configuration file
