<p>Last updated: 13th February 2007, Des Kernan</p><p>Configuring the passwords on Cisco routers</p><p>The standard agreed approach to passwords in the laboratory routers is:</p><p>User EXEC password: cisco Privileged EXEC password: class</p><p>To configure the passwords one must be connected to the router via the console port using a PC and console cable. You also need to enter privileged mode.</p><p>Step 1 Log in to the router in user EXEC mode. Mode user EXEC is the default mode.</p><p>Step 2 Log in to the router in privileged EXEC mode Enter enable at the user mode prompt</p><p>Router>enable</p><p>Step 3 Enter global configuration mode Enter configure terminal at the privileged mode prompt.</p><p>Router#configure terminal</p><p>Step 4 Configuring the console password</p><p>Router(config)#line console 0 Router(config-line)#password cisco Router(config-line)#login Router(config-line)#exit Router(config)#</p><p>Step 5 Configuring the enable password Router(config)#enable password class Router(config)#exit</p><p>Step 6 Return to user EXEC mode Router#disable</p><p>Show the router’s running configuration</p><p>Enter privileged EXEC mode Router>enable Router#show running-config You should be able to see the password in the configuration file</p>
