What is the Corporate Data Warehouse

The Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) is an exciting development in the way that Education Queensland (EQ) collects manages and analyses the wealth of information required to monitor the performance of educational service delivery. The data has been collected from a number of sources that have passed though a validation and transformation process to ensure integrity and easy analysis.

The objectives for the Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) include:

 collection, validation and linking of data from multiple source systems for the purpose of strategic analysis and reporting on EQ business performance measures for students, schools and the organisation as a whole;  easy access to and interpretation of corporate data (both historical and current) for all staff (within security constraints); and  provision of a data warehouse infrastructure and techniques to align CDW development with business needs.

The benefits of adopting a data warehouse approach include:

 a single trusted source of EQ performance data;  ability to link data sourced from different systems in order to derive previously unavailable performance measures;  ability to analyse historical data no longer available in the source systems;  enabling all parts of the organisation to make decisions and report on the same set of figures;  controlled access to data;  greater sharing of data across organisational boundaries for improved decision making;  schools' ability to access data;  technology capable of managing large amounts of data  scalability to enable new datasets to be added; and data structured for ease of analysis instead of for operational processing.

The data warehouse should be treated as a trusted source of enterprise decision support data. To achieve this, key data from different systems will be extracted, verified, combined and transformed into suitable summary data sets that can be used to monitor/research key performance indicators requiring data from several sources.

The data warehouse is not designed to enable updating of data. It relies on the source system for accuracy, currency and completeness. The data warehouse can be useful for highlighting inaccuracies and incompleteness in source data. Strategies to improve the quality of the source data should then be implemented.
