Salt River Landfill

CLASS SPECIFICATION STARTING PAY: $13.83 per hour OPERATOR I

Definition: Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled work associated with the operation and maintenance of the Salt River Landfill.

Tasks:

Learn basic maintenance (pre/post trip) on blade and landfill compactor.

Learn to operate the blade and landfill compactor.

Develop an understanding of the operation of the CAES system on the landfill compactors and how to use them properly.

Operates wheel loader/fork lift/broom to load chipper with green waste, load and unload pallets of materials, to sweep roadways and parking lots.

Operates a water wagon to wet haul roads and those roads where cars, trucks, and commercial sanitation vehicles are driving to minimize the amount of dirt/dust in the air.

Operates a roll off truck to load and unload roll off bins.

Performs a variety of general grounds keeping activities, including picking up trash and brush, and sets up barricades and portable fencing for work areas.

Assists with the maintenance of Landfill grounds both manually and by using equipment for tasks such as digging, hauling or spreading dirt, concrete, and rock.

Directs traffic to appropriate parking and dumping locations and inspects loads ensuring that inappropriate material does not come into the landfill.

Performs a variety of building maintenance and repair tasks, including cleaning, changing light bulbs, setting up tables and chairs for special events.

Uses the ZONAR system to perform pre-trip inspections and record any break downs.

Inspects (including equipment without ZONAR system) and performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment operated.

Wash landfill equipment as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

 Knowledge of basic Landfill safety procedures.  Knowledge of basic maintenance (pre/post trip) on water wagon, roll-off truck and loader.  Ability to proficiently operate the water wagon, roll-off truck and loader.  Ability to operate and communicate over a two-way radio.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Arizona operator’s license and be insurable under tribal insurer requirements (e.g., be age 21 or over, no DUI convictions within the last 5 years, no reckless driving, no speeding tickets in excess of 15 mph over the posted speed limit, no more than one at-fault accident, and no more than three speeding tickets within the last 3 years). Must be able to pass a pre-employment and random drug screening tests. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required.
