The Course: The purpose of this course is to enhance students’ communication skills in a variety of areas, such as critical thinking, listening, language use, delivery, non-verbal techniques, small group communication, professional communication, interviewing skills, and effective presentation of ideas in both interpersonal and public speaking contexts. Skill improvement will be accomplished through both enhanced knowledge base and practical application.

Course Objectives This course is designed to provide the opportunity for improvement in both the theoretical understanding and practical performance of verbal and nonverbal communication in a variety of contexts. The specific learning outcomes for the course are to develop the ability to:  conduct audience and contextual analysis  locate and evaluate pertinent and valid information to support a thesis  present information in an organized, concise and objective manner  present a persuasive message to a targeted audience  create and utilize presentation aids (including PowerPoint) to enhance audience comprehension  demonstrate credibility by using effective delivery skills  listen to, evaluate and respond critically to messages presented by others  practice the ethical responsibilities of a communicator  work in groups toward a common goal and purpose

ATTENDANCE: Because you learn from listening to speeches as well as from your own speaking experience and because being a part of the audience while classmates speak is part of your obligation in speech class, you should attend all class meetings. Being late to class repeatedly can result in a grade penalty from the course. If you come late to class it is your responsibility to have your absence erased from the grade book. Students who miss class assume responsibility to obtain assignments and turn them in on time.

Withdrawal Policy: During a first attempt or a second attempt in the same course, if you withdraw or are withdrawn by your professor before the specified withdrawal deadline, you will receive a W. After the specified deadline, only the instructor can withdraw the student and ONLY for a violation of the attendance policy. If you do not take the required final examination and do not have an approved absence, you will receive a grade of F for the course.
