1. What is non-verbal communication?
Nonverbal communication is when we use gestures or expressions (not words) to communicate. We use nonverbal communication 50-90% of the time without even knowing it.
Four types of nonverbal communication are: 1. body language 2. appearance 3. sound of voice 4. environment
2. Four functions of nonverbal communication:
Nonverbal communication… 1. complements your words (helps send the message) 2. emphasize words (stress one particular word- NO!) 3. replace words (nodding your head instead of saying yes) 4. contradict words (sarcastic- rolling your eyes or changing your stance) 3. Explain how body language affects communication.
Different types of body language include: facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, posture, movement to communicate
1. Masking- disguising your true feelings (smiling when you’re unhappy) 2. Gestures: Replace words Emphasize points Heighten descriptions
4. Why is your appearance important?
Appearance gives you a first impression of who you are. You dress to fit into a group (friends, family, culture). Your appearance shows your attitude toward a certain situation or person. If it is important to you, you will dress up or make an effort to look nice. If it’s not important, you won’t make that effort. Your appearance also shows your attitude toward yourself. Are you important enough to spend extra time on yourself? Do you have a low self- esteem and not care about your appearance? 5. What is paralanguage?
Paralanguage is how you change your voice when you speak and other sounds you make to communicate. 1. Sound of voice- loud, changing voices (high or low) 2. pausing to reflect on thoughts or emphasize a point 3. using fillers- um, ah
6. How does environment affect language?
Environment affects: 1. behavior 2. feelings/mood 3. color, lighting, sound, and space are all a part of an environment
Different types of space: 1. intimate- 18 inches or less 2. personal- up to 4 feet 3. social- up to 12 feet 4. public- anything over 12 feet between people
